CDTM Venture Fund Research
Investment Thesis
CDTM Venture Fund is an alumni-backed investment vehicle affiliated with the Center for Digital Technology & Management (CDTM), a 25-year-old elite interdisciplinary graduate program in Munich run jointly by LMU and TUM. The fund exists to keep capital and support inside the CDTM community: it invests exclusively in startups that have at least one CDTM alumnus or alumna on the founding team, and returns a significant share of its profits back to CDTM to fund the education of future students. The thesis is not sector-specific — it is a talent-and-network thesis. CDTM has trained over 1,100 alumni who have founded more than 280 startups, nine of which reached unicorn status (Personio, Trade Republic, Monzo, Forto, Tier, Foodora, Razor Group, Cellares, EGYM). The fund is a mechanism for turning that alumni density into a structured early check plus a mentoring network, rather than a bet on any single vertical.
Sector Focus
Because eligibility is founder-based rather than sector-based, the live portfolio spans multiple verticals: workplace wellness/breathwork (Regulate), AI-driven industrial energy procurement (Avoltra), AI-native construction project management (Alago), autonomous-factory AI agents for manufacturing (Manex AI), and AI-driven biomanufacturing (Differential Bio). The common thread across the portfolio is a heavy AI/ML component layered on a vertical software or industrial workflow, reflecting the technical bent of the CDTM program itself.
Stage Focus
The fund invests at pre-seed and seed. Every confirmed deal to date has been a Pre-Seed or Seed round, and the fund's own announcement states capital will go to roughly 60 early-stage startups over its first four years — implying small, high-volume checks rather than concentrated bets.
Check Size
No check size has been publicly disclosed. Given a total raised fund of €8.2M spread across a stated target of ~60 investments over four years, the implied average check is in the low-to-mid five figures to low six figures (roughly $25K-$250K), consistent with the fund's description of enabling "even small tickets" from its 316 LPs, several of which co-invest alongside the fund itself.
Lead Tendency
CDTM Venture Fund follows. In every confirmed investment reviewed, the round was led by an outside institutional investor — Project A (Avoltra), Realyze Ventures (Alago), Lightspeed Venture Partners/BlueYard Capital (Manex AI), 4impact.vc (Regulate), and Ananda Impact Ventures/ReGen Ventures (Differential Bio) — with CDTM Venture Fund participating as initial or co-investment capital rather than setting terms.
Recent Activity
The fund officially launched and closed its €8.2M raise in February 2025, backed by 316 CDTM alumni LPs including over a dozen unicorn founders. Since then it has been actively deploying: Differential Bio (March 2025), Alago and Manex AI (June 2025), Avoltra (July 2025), and Regulate (May 2026) are all confirmed participations. Fund status is actively deploying, with its most recent disclosed check in May 2026.
Portfolio Highlights
The public, verifiable portfolio (5 companies as of this research) consists entirely of 2025-2026 Munich-area early-stage startups: Differential Bio (AI-driven biomanufacturing scale-up), Alago (AI-native construction project management, "alago.ai"), Manex AI (autonomous-factory AI agents, €8M seed led by Lightspeed/BlueYard), Avoltra (AI industrial energy procurement, €2.3M pre-seed led by Project A), and Regulate/Regulate Breathwork (science-backed workplace breathwork platform, €1.4M seed led by 4impact.vc). No exits have been recorded yet given the fund's youth.
Team
- Franz Waltenberger — Managing Director and Fund Manager; long-standing member of the CDTM management team, operationally runs the fund day to day.
- Dr. Sophie Ahrens-Gruber — Investment Committee; Principal at Acton Capital, formerly Head of Corporate Development at Burda.
- Christian Deger — Investment Committee; founding CEO of Payworks (exited to Visa).
- Leon Szeli — Investment Committee; founding CEO of Presize (exited to Meta).
- Dr. Andreas Franz — Chairman of the CDTM Alumni Association, represents the LP base's institutional continuity.
Decision Process
Investment decisions run through a small Investment Committee of CDTM-alumni operators/investors (Ahrens-Gruber, Deger, Szeli) alongside Managing Director Franz Waltenberger, who manages the fund operationally. The fund markets itself as able to move quickly, flexibly, and "unbureaucratically" relative to traditional VC process, consistent with its small-check, high-conviction-on-founder model.
Founder Preferences
The single hard eligibility filter is that at least one founder must be a CDTM alumnus or alumna — a graduate of the Technology Management add-on program at LMU/TUM, selected from a pool of roughly 450 applicants per cohort (25 admitted twice yearly). Beyond that filter, the fund backs technical, product-minded founders building AI-enabled vertical software or industrial technology, mirroring the profile of CDTM's own historical unicorn founders.
Geographic Focus
Heavily Munich and broader German/DACH concentrated, reflecting CDTM's Munich home base (LMU/TUM) and the geographic clustering of its alumni network, though the LP base and eligible founders are global CDTM alumni.
