Investment Thesis
Amplify Capital is a Toronto-based, impact-oriented early-stage venture fund founded in 2016 (originally as the MaRS Catalyst Fund, spun out independently in 2019). Its stated thesis is that "the most important problems make the best investments," and it seeks founders solving hard, technical, and regulated problems early. The firm explicitly targets industries that "don't have easy answers" -- technical, regulated, and harder to get right -- and has held that focus for its full ten-year history, investing in deep tech, energy, and healthcare AI before those categories were fashionable with generalist VCs.
Sector Focus
Amplify organizes its entire strategy around three pillars:
- Climate: foundational technologies of energy, industry, and the frontier (grid-scale energy storage, next-generation wind, AI for utility grids, decarbonized heavy industry and cement, and novel biomanufacturing).
- Health: technologies making care faster, better, and more accessible (digital pharmacy, cardiac rehab, AI clinical decision support, AI drug discovery, and revenue-cycle/administrative AI for providers).
- Work: platforms redefining how people learn, earn, and build their futures (edtech and future-of-work / human-capital software).
Stage Focus
Amplify invests primarily at pre-seed and seed, with select Series A follow-ons. It aims to be an early, hands-on institutional partner and has historically led or co-led the majority of its core positions, particularly in its newest fund.
Check Size
Per Amplify's own September 2026 disclosure, Fund III writes cheques of roughly CAD $750,000 to $3,000,000 per company (approximately USD $540,000-$2,160,000), a step up from smaller cheque sizes in its first two funds.
Lead Tendency
Amplify leads or co-leads the majority of its core positions, and partner Craig Hunter has stated the firm "likes to lead."
Recent Activity
Amplify closed the final close of its third fund, Fund III, in April 2026 (publicly announced September 17, 2026) at CAD $60 million, bringing total assets under management to over CAD $110 million. Fund III is targeting a portfolio of 25-30 companies and had made 14 investments as of the announcement, including Cura (low-carbon cement), Reusables (Vancouver), Planetary Technologies (Halifax, ocean carbon removal), Lyteflo (Montreal), Airloom Energy (modular wind turbines), Lumina (electric autonomous heavy machinery), Endor Health (diabetes pharmacy), Kento Health (cardiac rehab, co-developed with Mayo Clinic), Inference Health (healthcare administrative AI), and Kinship (education). The firm also participated in Future Fields' oversubscribed $8M Series A in mid-2025 and ThinkLabs AI's $28M Series A in early 2026 alongside NVIDIA's NVentures and Energy Impact Partners.
Portfolio Highlights
Amplify's highest-profile outcomes to date include Pathway Medical, an AI clinical-reference platform acquired by Doximity for $63M in August 2025; Valence Discovery, an AI drug-discovery company acquired by Recursion Pharmaceuticals; Inkblot, a mental-health platform acquired by Green Shield Canada; and Hydrostor, a compressed-air energy storage company that has since raised a $200M round from the Canada Growth Fund, Goldman Sachs, and CPP Investments. Other notable portfolio companies span Fund I and Fund II, including Carbon Upcycling Technologies, Alt Tex, Ditch Labs, Sylvatex, Uvaro, and Verto Health.
Team
- Kathryn Wortsman, Managing Partner and Founder -- with the firm since its 2016 founding as the MaRS Catalyst Fund; 25 years of VC/PE experience; leads the investment committee.
- Craig Hunter, Partner -- joined in 2025, replacing outgoing partner Daniel Armali; a repeat operator (early Uber employee, CEO of Bitmaker (acquired by General Assembly), CEO of Dwelling, GM at Ritual) and prolific angel investor, brought in to strengthen the firm's operator-founder support for portfolio companies.
- Andrea Poptsis, CFO -- INSEAD MBA; joined full-time in 2024 after prior CFO/COO roles at small-to-mid-sized businesses.
- Humza Salam, Associate/Investor -- sources and evaluates pre-seed to Series A opportunities across health, energy, climate, and work.
Decision Process
Amplify operates as a small, five-person partnership; investment decisions run through the Managing Partner and Partner, consistent with a partnership-style decision process rather than a large investment committee.
Founder Preferences
Amplify is drawn to "relentless founders" tackling hard science and structurally difficult, regulated problems, and prides itself on being a hands-on, founder-first partner from first check through exit -- multiple founder testimonials specifically credit the firm's managing partner and partner with being present in the room for both early rounds and eventual acquisitions.
Geographic Focus
The large majority of Amplify's capital and portfolio is Canadian (Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax, Edmonton), with selective cross-border investments into the United States (e.g., ThinkLabs AI, headquartered in New York).
