Investment Thesis
Cosmos Ventures backs "philosopher-builders" — founders building new institutions for the AI age. The firm's founding thesis, laid out in the "Dare to Found" essay published alongside the fund's launch, argues that AI is dissolving the assumption that intelligence requires a human author, and that this creates the largest opening for institution-building since the American founding. Enduring companies of this era will not simply iterate on user feedback; their founders must answer normative questions about how society should incorporate AI, similar to how Benjamin Franklin built libraries, newspapers, and mutual insurance for a new kind of self-governing society. Cosmos explicitly rejects both "AI is a normal technology" complacency and "only frontier labs matter" fatalism, positioning itself to fund the builders in between.
Sector Focus
The fund's stated focus spans four areas: AI safety and assurance infrastructure (certification, auditing, and insurance for AI agents), frontier AI and open-source model infrastructure, human-autonomy-preserving AI products, and education. The "philosopher-builder" framing is broad by design — it is a lens on the kind of founder rather than a narrow vertical — but early bets cluster around trust/assurance infrastructure and frontier model tooling.
Stage Focus
Cosmos invests at the earliest stages: pre-seed and seed, when founders are still deciding what their companies will become. It is a debut fund (Fund I) and has not yet demonstrated activity beyond these earliest rounds.
Check Size
Check size has not been publicly disclosed by the firm.
Lead Tendency
Not established. Cosmos appears to co-invest alongside established firms rather than confirmed as a lead: it invested in AIUC's early round alongside NFDG (seed) and Ribbit Capital (Series A), and invested in Prime Intellect alongside Founders Fund, with Radical Ventures later leading a $130M Series A with NVIDIA's participation.
Recent Activity
Cosmos Ventures publicly launched on September 16, 2026 with a $77.6 million Fund I. The fund is downstream of two years of community-building: its co-founder Brendan McCord's nonprofit, Cosmos Institute, has run grants, fellowships, and an Oxford philosophy-and-AI seminar since 2024, and several Fund I companies were sourced directly from that community (AIUC co-founder Rune Kvist reportedly found the Institute through its syllabus before Cosmos backed his company). The fund is actively deploying Fund I capital.
Portfolio Highlights
- AIUC (Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company) — builds certification, auditing, and insurance infrastructure to make AI agents safe for enterprise adoption. Co-founder Rune Kvist was Anthropic's first product and go-to-market hire.
- Prime Intellect — open infrastructure for training, deploying, and improving frontier AI models. Cosmos invested alongside Founders Fund; Radical Ventures later led a $130M Series A with NVIDIA participating.
- Workshop Labs — built AI systems tailored to individual users, founded by Luke Drago and Rudolf Laine to counter "the intelligence curse." Acquired by Thinking Machines Lab in April 2026 — Cosmos's first realized outcome, achieved before the firm's debut fund was even publicly announced.
- An undisclosed stealth education company (name not public).
Team
- Brendan McCord, General Partner & Co-Founder — Also founder and Chair of Cosmos Institute. Career spans 610 days in the U.S. Navy submarine force (including under Arctic ice), founding the Department of Defense's first applied AI organization, and authoring the Pentagon's first AI strategy. Founding CEO of two AI startups acquired for a combined $400M. Holds degrees from MIT and Harvard Business School; Visiting Fellow at St Catherine's College, Oxford, where he co-teaches a philosophy-and-AI seminar.
- Matt Mandel, General Partner & Co-Founder — Previously an investor at Union Square Ventures; earlier was Chief of Staff at vertical-farming startup AeroFarms. Studied philosophy and computer science at Harvard, where he won the university's prize for best undergraduate thesis in moral, social, and political philosophy.
Decision Process
Two-person General Partnership (McCord and Mandel), who say they developed the Cosmos Ventures thesis together before formalizing the fund. Given the fund's small size and stage focus, founders should expect direct access to both GPs rather than a larger platform team.
Founder Preferences
Cosmos looks for "philosopher-builders": founders wrestling with genuine normative questions — who sets the rules for AI agent behavior, what platforms owe the people who depend on them, how to preserve human agency inside AI-mediated workflows — and treating those questions as product decisions rather than academic debates, often before the business model itself is fully settled.
Geographic Focus
Not specified by the firm. Portfolio to date is concentrated in the U.S. (San Francisco-based AIUC and Prime Intellect), with an Oxford-linked research and fellowship network spanning the U.S. and U.K. via Cosmos Institute.
Notable LPs
Reid Hoffman, Joe Liemandt, Stand Together, Fred Wilson, Meyer "Micky" Malka, and the Astera Institute — a roster weighted toward long-horizon technology investors and philanthropic/scientific-research networks rather than typical seed-fund LPs.
