Cove Fund Research
Investment Thesis
Cove Fund is a family of seed-stage venture funds backing Southern California technology and life science startups. It is headquartered in "The Cove" at UC Irvine's Beall Applied Innovation. The firm calls itself a generalist and takes a bottom-up approach: each opportunity is judged on its own merit rather than against a sector or macro-trend thesis. What it wants is a strong leadership team, core technology with substantial and sustainable differentiation and barriers to entry, a large market, and a seed round that gets the company to a clear inflection point. At a minimum there must be a proof of concept and evidence of product-market fit; pre-revenue and early-revenue companies both qualify.
Stage Focus
Seed. Cove uses a "seed and feed" strategy: a first check, then significant reserves held for later rounds in the company's life. It participates in seed rounds of roughly $1M to $5M that include the fund and its syndicate partners. The firm expects the seed syndicate to own 20% or more of the company, and it thinks in terms of an exit that returns 20-30x within 5 to 7 years.
Check Size
Initial investments are typically $250K to $1M, with meaningful follow-on participation. Syndicate partners fill out the rest of the round.
Lead Tendency
Cove prefers to lead rounds. It will follow trusted lead investors case by case.
Recent Activity
Cove is on its third fund. Fund I launched around 2014. Fund II held an initial close above $12M in February 2018. Fund III held an initial close in October 2021 and was expected to exceed $30M. The Fund III portfolio page lists new investments through April 2026:
- Quantum Elements, an AI control and validation software layer for quantum hardware
- iCardio.ai, deep learning for echocardiography interpretation (closed a $4.5M strategic round led by Cedars-Sinai Technology Ventures in April 2026)
- Cenfire, a fabless semiconductor company commercializing MEMS relay technology
- Time Machine, an AI sales onboarding and training platform
- Eira Bio, antibody therapeutics against multi-pass membrane proteins
- Carro, an Irvine-based e-commerce network for brands, retailers and creators
In October 2026 portfolio company VECKTA announced an $11M Series A led by Origin Ventures. The fund looks to be actively deploying from Fund III.

Decision Process
The fund managers decide together with member input. The process runs from introductory talks with the managers, to a presentation to the fund's Members, to diligence, term sheet and close. The website says first contact to funding takes about 6 to 8 weeks for a well-prepared company. Members, who are entrepreneurs, local business people and family offices, take part in sourcing, diligence and post-investment governance, and are described as the fund's competitive advantage.
Founder Preferences
Great founding teams come first, with a lean toward founders who can lead through setbacks. The fund wants a strong leadership team already in place to build the product and the organization. Cove evaluates hundreds of companies a year and invests in a handful. A warm introduction to a fund manager is preferred, but the contact page is open.
Geographic Focus
Southern California is the core. Because of close ties to the University of California, it may also invest in UC-affiliated startups elsewhere in California. Portfolio companies are mostly in Orange County, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Involvement
Cove is an active investor. It usually takes a board seat and offers mentoring, coaching, and introductions to customers, employees and service providers, while avoiding micromanagement.
Gaps
Total AUM and Fund III's final size are not disclosed on the site. Stage and date per investment are not stated beyond portfolio page post dates, so stage-at-investment is omitted. The covefund.com/companies page timed out on read.
