CULT Capital Research
Investment Thesis
CULT Capital (formerly JMK Consumer Growth Partners) is a New York-based growth equity firm that invests exclusively in what it calls "cult brands" — consumer products companies that have built fanatical, identity-driven followings rather than merely transactional customer bases. The firm's own definition: a cult brand "changes the world by providing a product that otherwise would not exist," and it "hyper-connects with its followers" by selling a lifestyle, not just a product. The firm was co-founded by John M. Kenney and Sarah A. Woelfel in 2014-2015, after Kenney's earlier career at TSG Consumer Partners and AEA Investors and Woelfel's time at Audax and Deutsche Bank. CULT is currently investing out of its second fund.
Sector Focus
CULT invests across five CPG categories, in the firm's own words:
- Beauty + Personal Care
- Food + Beverage
- Homecare
- Pet
- Wellness
This is a physical-product consumer goods mandate, not a software or app-based consumer thesis — the canonical F4-OS sector taxonomy does not have a precise CPG slug, so food_beverage and consumer_apps_social are used as the closest available top-level tags, with the firm's real category language captured in subsector descriptions.
Stage Focus
CULT is a growth-stage investor, not an early-stage VC. The firm states it partners with "ambitious brands that have annual revenues of at least $2 million and are seeking capital investment of up to $10 million." Rounds are typically labeled Series A or growth equity in press coverage (e.g., Homecourt's $8M Series A, Subtl Beauty's $5.5M Series A, Act+Acre's Series A).
Check Size
Based on disclosed round sizes, typical CULT checks or round participation range from roughly $2M (e.g., participation in Hanni's $2M round) up to $8-10M when leading (e.g., $8M lead in Homecourt's Series A). The firm's own stated ceiling is $10M per investment.
Lead Tendency
CULT predominantly leads. It led Homecourt's $8M Series A (2025), Act+Acre's Series A (2021), Subtl Beauty's $5.5M Series A (2023), Lawless Beauty's growth investment (2019), and Jaanuu's Series A (2018). It has also participated in syndicated rounds it did not lead, such as Hanni's $2M round (led by Melitas Ventures, October 2025).
Recent Activity
CULT has been highly active through 2025 while deploying its second fund:

Decision Process
CULT operates as a small partnership (two founding partners plus a lean investment team), consistent with a partnership decision process rather than a solo-GP or large investment-committee structure.
Founder Preferences
CULT explicitly seeks founders building brands with "fanatical followers" — customers who derive a sense of identity and belonging from the product, not just utility. The firm emphasizes selectivity, reviewing "hundreds of companies annually but investing in only a handful."
Geographic Focus
Primarily United States-based brands (New York HQ, and portfolio concentrated in US consumer brands), though the portfolio includes at least one brand, Luna Daily, with UK investor and operational ties.
