Cultivate Next (Chipotle) Research

Investment Thesis

Cultivate Next is the corporate venture fund of Chipotle Mexican Grill. It invests in companies that advance Chipotle's purpose to "Cultivate a Better World" and its long-term vision, with a focus on measurable impact and on improving the experience of farmers, suppliers and restaurant teams. The fund looks across the whole food system, from how ingredients are grown to how they are prepared and served. Its tagline is "Investing in entrepreneurs reshaping how food is grown, moved, and served."

Focus Areas

The website names five areas:

  • Agricultural science and technology: soil health, grower support, sustainability (Imio, CH4 Global, Nitricity, Benchmark Labs, Greenfield Robotics).
  • Supply chain resilience: visibility, efficiency and trust across global supply networks (Lumachain, Athian, Local Line).
  • Ingredient innovation: new varieties and sustainable oils (Zero Acre Farms, Plantible, Meati, Simpli).
  • Automation and robotics: consistency and efficiency in restaurant operations and agricultural production (Hyphen, Vebu, Greenfield Robotics).
  • Emerging brands: food brands and concepts that embody Chipotle's mission (Brassica).

The July 2026 round also added guest-experience technology (POPid biometrics for loyalty, payment and entry) and sustainability measurement (Athian).

Stage Focus

The fund says it is largely early-stage focused and partners with teams at pivotal inflection points, backing scalable solutions that can work in real operational environments and support a path to enterprise adoption. Chipotle's own press materials described the original 2022 mandate as early-stage and growth-stage. Specific stages for individual deals are not stated on the site, so none are recorded.

Check Size

No check size is published. The fund is a $100M pool (see below), so checks are likely small relative to institutional funds, but this is inference and is not recorded as a field.

Fund Size and History

Chipotle launched Cultivate Next in April 2022 with $50M. In February 2024, on the two-year anniversary, it added another $50M, bringing the pool to $100M. The vehicle is a corporate balance-sheet fund rather than a traditional LP-backed fund, so AUM is recorded as the $100M commitment only in this document, not as a structured field.

Lead Tendency

Not stated publicly. Announcements describe investments in portfolio companies without naming lead or follow roles, so lead tendency is unknown.

Recent Activity

  • July 2026: invested in six companies: Benchmark Labs, Imio, Clean Crop Technologies, Athian, Simpli and POPid.
  • January 2025: backed CH4 Global (methane-reducing cattle feed) and Plantible (duckweed-based protein).
  • October 2024: first restaurant concept investment (Brassica, a six-unit Mediterranean chain in Ohio whose CEO is an ex-Chipotle manager) alongside Lumachain (AI food traceability).
  • February 2024: doubled the fund to $100M.

The fund is actively deploying.

Portfolio Highlights

The portfolio page lists 17 companies: Athian, Benchmark Labs, Brassica, CH4 Global, Clean Crop Technologies, Greenfield Robotics, Hyphen, Imio, Local Line, Lumachain, Meati, Nitricity, Plantible, POPid, Simpli, Vebu and Zero Acre Farms. Hyphen, an automated makeline that Chipotle uses in its own restaurants, is the most visible strategic tie. No exits are announced on the site.

Team

  • Christian Gammill: Managing Partner and Co-Founder
  • Camden McRae: Managing Partner and Co-Founder
  • Brooke Boucaut: Investment Principal
  • Matthew Murch: Investment Associate
  • Mark Linao: Portfolio Manager
  • Tim McAfee: Strategic Advisor, Food and Agriculture

The site describes the team as a mix of corporate leaders, startup founders and venture investors.

Decision Process

Not published. As a corporate venture arm with two managing partners, decisions likely sit with the partners with Chipotle strategic alignment as a gate. Recorded as unknown.

Founder Preferences

Teams with scalable solutions that can prove out in real operating environments (farms, plants and restaurants) and that align strategically with Chipotle's food-with-integrity mission. Strategic fit with Chipotle matters as much as financial return.

Geographic Focus

Headquartered at 8601 Lincoln Blvd, Los Angeles, CA. Portfolio is mostly US, with some international companies (Lumachain is Australian). No stated geographic restriction.

Gaps

No published check size, lead tendency, decision timeline or deal-by-deal stage. Contact is [email protected].
