Defiant Research
Investment Thesis
Defiant is a London- and Lisbon-based early-stage venture firm founded in 2024 by Joseph Pizzolato and Cam Rail, who came out of stealth in January 2025 with $30M raised toward a $70M target for their debut fund. The firm's thesis is that venture investing is due for a technological overhaul: most VC firms still operate the way they did fifty years ago, relying on relationships and gut feel rather than data. Defiant positions itself as "Europe's first VC firm engineered like a technology company," dedicating roughly a third of its operating budget to building internal and external-facing products rather than just deploying capital. The firm backs B2B software and fintech founders building category-leading businesses out of Europe, with a preference for technical founders who understand their market deeply.
Sector Focus
Defiant focuses on two core sectors: B2B SaaS/enterprise software and fintech. Within B2B software the firm has shown particular interest in AI-native workflow tools (its investment in Zero, an AI-native CRM) and vertical data infrastructure for regulated industries (its investment in Rivia, an AI-native data engine for clinical trials). The firm's own thematic essays ("Picks and Shovels in the AI Gold Rush," "Defensibility in the AI Era") signal a thesis around AI infrastructure and defensibility built on proprietary workflow data, growth loops, and rapid experimentation — themes it looks for across its target sectors rather than treating AI as a standalone vertical.
Stage Focus
Defiant invests at late seed and Series A, targeting companies with a live product in market generating revenue, emerging or established signs of product-market fit, and early signs of a repeatable growth engine. The firm is explicitly able to lead, co-lead, or follow rounds — a flexibility distinct from most seed-stage-only European funds.
Check Size
Typical checks range from $1M seed tickets up to $10M for Series A, per the firm's own portfolio criteria and press coverage: $1M–$3M at seed and $2M–$10M at Series A. The debut fund targets 15–20 portfolio companies.
Lead Tendency
Defiant states it is willing to lead or co-lead rounds, a differentiator TechCrunch called out explicitly at launch. In practice, its two disclosed investments to date have both been as a participant alongside a lead: Primary Venture Partners led Zero's seed, and Earlybird led Rivia's Series A. The firm's capability and its observed behavior to date diverge, so lead tendency is recorded as mixed.
Recent Activity
Defiant's first disclosed investment was Rivia's $15M Series A in March 2026, alongside Earlybird and existing investors SpeedInvest, Amino Collective, and Nina Capital. Its most recent disclosed investment is Zero's $10.3M seed in September 2026, led by Primary Venture Partners with participation from Inception Fund, Defiant, and Greens. Both investments came roughly a year after the fund's January 2025 launch, consistent with a firm that spent its first year building out its data infrastructure (Morpheus, its internal deal-sourcing and scoring tool) before actively deploying capital.
Portfolio Highlights
The firm's public portfolio page lists a "Current Portfolio" and a separate set of "prior companies we've supported" (investments made by the Defiant team in earlier roles at firms like Felix Capital and Vitruvian Partners), but the page renders portfolio logos as untitled images that could not be resolved to company names from the page itself. The two disclosed Defiant-fund investments are Zero, a Helsinki-based AI-native CRM founded by Tuomo Riekki and Santtu, and Rivia, a Zurich-based AI-native clinical trial data engine founded in 2022 by Erik Scalfaro and Tiago Kielgher.

Decision Process
As a two-partner founding team (Pizzolato and Rail), decisions run through a small partnership rather than a large investment committee, supplemented by a bench of operating advisors and venture partners.
Founder Preferences
Based on how the firm describes its Rivia investment, Defiant favors high-energy, high-determination technical founders building category-defining businesses with capital-efficient growth, even at small team sizes (Rivia had an 11-person team at Series A).
Geographic Focus
Defiant is based in London and Lisbon and invests primarily across Europe, with occasional investments in the US (Zero, its most recent investment, is a Helsinki-founded company that has since become US-facing). Its funding base draws from European and global tech figures, including general partners at Atomico, Cherry Ventures, Hedosophia, Salesforce Ventures, Earlybird, Vitruvian, GRO, Mubadala, and Seek Ventures.
Products
Distinct from most VC firms, Defiant runs three public/internal products as part of its data-driven positioning: Morpheus (internal deal-sourcing tool that uses an LLM to extract structured data from pitch decks and enriches it with external sources), Blueprint (lets founders benchmark their own metrics against Defiant's private dataset of 200+ VC-backed B2B SaaS businesses), and a European Open Source monitor tracking GitHub activity for B2B software and fintech startups in Europe.
