Dent Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Dent Capital is an AI-first early-stage venture firm based in Menlo Park, California. Its homepage states that it invests in AI-first startups building the future of how we live, work, play, shop and bank. Stated areas of interest are leapfrog verticals, functional disruptions, and the picks and shovels of AI. The firm looks for founders it calls Dent-makers: people who want to put a dent in the universe, shape industries and drive transformative change.
The site lists six traits it screens for: Dent-makers, data-driven builders, AI-first companies (AI at the core from the start), huge markets, hard problems, and technical insights that create defensible advantages.
Stage Focus
Dent Capital invests at pre-seed and seed. The Dent Spark pitch competition is open to US-based AI-first startups at pre-seed and seed stage. Hiro Tien's LinkedIn describes the firm as investing in pre-seed and seed AI founders.
Check Size
The firm does not publish a standard check size. Dent Spark winners split at least $250,000 in SAFE investments from Dent Capital, and the firm advertises $250K+ in investments per cohort. The firm says it is open to participating in existing rounds. Songscription ($5M seed), ALIGNMT AI ($6.5M seed) and Vectorial ($3M seed) were all rounds led by others, so Dent appears to write small checks as a participant. Check size range is not stated and is left blank.
Lead Tendency
Every disclosed investment found (Songscription led by Reach Capital, ALIGNMT AI led by AIX Ventures, Vectorial led by Smilegate and SenseAI Ventures) shows Dent Capital participating rather than leading. Lead tendency is recorded as follows because of that thin sample.
Recent Activity
- Dent Spark Fall 2026: applications closed October 12, 2026, finalists get mentorship through October 26, and virtual pitch finals are on October 27, 2026. The top three winners split at least $250,000 in SAFE investments. The competition has run for three prior editions, roughly every six months.
- Vectorial: $3M seed, with Dent Capital participating alongside Smilegate, SenseAI Ventures, Berkeley SkyDeck and Stanford GSB Fund.
- Songscription: $5M seed announced November 2025, led by Reach Capital.
- ALIGNMT AI: $6.5M seed announced August 2025, led by AIX Ventures.
- SEC filings show Dent Capital Fund I LP with a total offering amount of $50,000,000, with a Form D/A filed recently.
Portfolio Highlights
The website has no portfolio page. Three portfolio companies were found through press releases: Songscription (AI music transcription), ALIGNMT AI (AI governance and compliance for healthcare) and Vectorial (human behaviour simulation platform). Crunchbase-style aggregators track only a few Dent investments, so the real portfolio is likely larger than the public record. No exits found.

Decision Process
The firm is run by three founding partners with venture partners who source deals. The specific decision process is not published. It is recorded as partnership based on that structure.
Expert Network and Value-Add
The firm describes a curated network of about 250 AI experts and about 100 vertical and functional experts who act as mentors, advisors and investors. It promises hands-on, day-one tactical guidance on product, fundraising, partnerships and growth.
Founder Preferences
Technical founders with deep AI expertise who are building AI-native companies in large markets and on hard problems. Dent Spark selects pre-seed and seed companies across vertical applications, enterprise workflows and developer tools. Founders must be US-based for the competition.
Geographic Focus
US-based startups. The firm is based in Menlo Park and is closely tied to the Stanford ecosystem through its partners.
