Foundry Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Foundry Ventures is a Stockholm-based pre-seed fund built around a single, sharply stated bet: in AI, the team is the only thing that compounds. The firm's own framing is blunt about why: models change monthly, products get rebuilt in a weekend, and almost everything an investor is trained to price at this stage (moat, defensibility, roadmap) is provisional. A defensibility story written before the first customer is, in their words, "a guess in a suit." What is legible early, and what they underwrite, is how fast a team learns. Practically, this means Foundry evaluates founders on ambition, agency, and learning velocity rather than traditional pitch-deck metrics, and it looks for teams building AI-native, services-as-a-software companies that automate tasks and augment people rather than simply wrapping a chatbot around an existing workflow.
Sector Focus
Foundry describes itself as industry agnostic within the Nordics, but its actual portfolio skews toward vertical AI applied to unglamorous, high-friction back-office and operational categories: HR and workforce planning (Openroll, Empley), sales and customer intelligence (Agaton), hospitality operations (Grand), e-commerce content and SEO (Wilgot), personal tax filing (Skattio), education (Memmo), no-code mobile app development (Newly), local-service-business software (BuilderBase), and, most recently, defense-tech sensing (Monava, acoustic drone detection). The through-line is AI-native software replacing manual, service-heavy processes rather than horizontal foundation-model or infrastructure plays.
Stage Focus
Foundry is explicitly a pre-seed specialist, positioning itself as the first institutional check for early Nordic AI founders, with occasional participation into seed rounds as portfolio companies mature (Agaton, Openroll, Monava all show Foundry following into subsequent rounds rather than exclusively leading first money in).
Check Size
The firm writes small, fast checks: a first cheque of either €100k or €200k, deployed at a pace of roughly one to three new teams per month. This is a high-velocity, high-volume pre-seed model rather than a concentrated, large-check strategy.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. Empley's pre-seed round was led by Foundry Ventures, while later raises for existing portfolio companies (Agaton's $10M seed, Monava's growth round) show Foundry participating alongside other lead investors such as Inception Fund, Alstin Capital, and Gungnir Capital. This is consistent with a fund that leads at the earliest pre-seed stage and then follows its winners.
Recent Activity
Foundry has been active through 2026: it participated in Agaton's ~$10M/€8.4M seed round (February 2026, co-led by Inception Fund and Alstin Capital, with Silo AI CEO Peter Sarlin and HubSpot CMO Kieran Flanagan also investing), pre-seeded workforce-simulation startup Empley, and most recently participated in an August 2026 funding round for Monava, a Swedish-Finnish acoustic drone detection startup, alongside lead investor Gungnir Capital and Hede Capital. The Monava round underscores a willingness to back defense-adjacent deep tech alongside its core enterprise-AI thesis.
Portfolio Highlights
Foundry's visible portfolio spans ten companies: Memmo (edtech), Agaton (AI sales/customer-conversation intelligence, $10M seed), Grand / Grand PMS (AI-assisted hospitality property management, Denmark), Wilgot (AI SEO and content optimization for e-commerce), Openroll (AI workforce platform for people and finance teams, YC-backed), Newly (AI native-app builder for iOS/Android), Skattio (automated personal tax filing), Empley (AI workforce simulation and planning for HR/finance leaders), BuilderBase (software for local service businesses), and Monava (AI acoustic drone detection for defense and critical infrastructure). Several portfolio companies (Agaton, Openroll, Monava) have gone on to raise larger rounds from other institutional investors, a reasonable early signal of picking ability for a fund this young.
Team
- Anders Nygren, Founding Partner – Sole named partner and the public face of the firm. Based in Stockholm, he focuses on pre-seed and seed evaluation, works directly with founders on go-to-market and fundraising readiness, and has a stated interest in AI-driven software that improves productivity, quality, and workflow speed. Foundry's launch was announced in partnership with Luminar Ventures, one of the most active seed funds in the Nordics, suggesting a close working relationship or platform support arrangement rather than a fully independent solo operation.
Decision Process
With a single named partner and no visible investment committee, decisions appear to run through a solo-GP model, likely supported by the Luminar Ventures partnership for deal flow, diligence, or back-office infrastructure. No formal decision timeline is published.
Founder Preferences
Foundry explicitly prioritizes founder ambition, agency, and rate of learning over traditional metrics or narrative moats at the earliest stage. It favors technical, execution-fast teams building AI-native products with real go-to-market motion, and is comfortable investing pre-product-market-fit given the emphasis on team over defensibility.
Geographic Focus
Foundry is embedded in and exclusively focused on the Nordic region, with Stockholm as its home base; its named portfolio spans Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
