Diagram Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Diagram Ventures is a Montreal-founded hybrid venture builder and early-stage investor focused exclusively on Fintech and Climatetech. Founded in 2016 by Paul Desmarais III and Francois Lafortune, Diagram takes a thesis-driven approach: it identifies large, structurally attractive problems in markets it knows deeply, then either builds companies from scratch through its in-house venture-creation team or backs outside founders attacking the same theses. The firm describes itself as making "high conviction, early stage investments, in markets that we know," leveraging the operational pattern-recognition it develops from incubating its own companies to underwrite third-party deals with more confidence than a generalist fund.
Sector Focus
Diagram splits its activity across two verticals:
- Fintech — banking-as-a-service, embedded finance, lending/mortgage infrastructure, insurance distribution, wealth and retirement, payments, and compliance tooling (Synctera, nesto, Baselane, Clark, Albert, Tallied, Conduit, Trice, Axle, Walnut, Upfront, Alpaca, Wealthsimple, PolicyBook)
- Climatetech — renewable energy, EV infrastructure, ESG data, and nature-based carbon solutions, concentrated through a dedicated $80M CAD ClimateTech Fund closed in October 2024 (Obeo, ReliON, veritree, Skyward, Lyteflo, Novisto)
Stage Focus
Diagram invests from Pre-Seed through Series A, and is comfortable being the first check into an idea that exists only as a plan on a page (its own venture-builder companies) as well as backing companies with products already live in market. It participates in follow-on rounds for existing portfolio companies (e.g., Synctera's Series A extension, Helika's Series A).
Check Size
Diagram does not publish a formal check-size range. Observed rounds it has led or co-led at Pre-Seed/Seed span roughly $2.5M–$4.6M in total round size (Axle $2.5M, Katara $2.6M, Walnut $4.6M, Coral $4.1M, Lyteflo $3M CAD, Obeo $3M, ReliON $3M), suggesting individual checks in the low hundreds of thousands to a few million dollars depending on lead vs. participant role.
Lead Tendency
Diagram both leads and co-invests. It led Trice's seed alongside RBC and JAM FINTOP, led Helika's 2023 seed, and co-led Synctera's 2025 Series A extension with Fin Capital. As a venture builder it is by definition the founding investor in companies it creates in-house.
Recent Activity
Diagram has been consistently active since closing its dedicated $80M CAD ClimateTech Fund in October 2024 (beating an initial $60M target, backed by Sagard and Investissement Québec). Recent disclosed rounds include Coral's $4.1M seed (February 2025), Lyteflo's $3M CAD seed (January 2025), Upfront's $2.5M raise (September 2024), Katara's $2.6M combined pre-seed/seed (August 2024), Walnut's $4.6M raise (August 2024), and Axle's $2.5M seed (July 2024). Portfolio company nesto made a notable acquisition of mortgage-lending giant CMLS Group in June 2024, and public deal trackers show continued nesto-related investment activity into mid-2026. Prior to the ClimateTech Fund, Diagram closed a $100M fund in May 2023 to continue building fintech companies, and Diagram Ventures III L.P. was launched in March 2024 with over C$115M in commitments.
Portfolio Highlights
Since 2016, Diagram has launched or invested in 35+ companies (40+ per its LinkedIn profile), raised five funds, and deployed $400M–$480M+ in capital, helping create 3,000+ jobs. Notable exits/acquisitions from its portfolio include Dialogue (Canada's largest virtual healthcare clinic), Collage (SMB HRIS), Breathe Life (life insurance distribution, now part of Zinnia), StreamingFast, Retirable, Conduit, and Tallied. Marquee active names include Synctera, Novisto, ClearEstate, Baselane, Clark, Albert, Helika, Wealthsimple, and Alpaca — the latter two being well-known, larger-scale fintech names in its network/co-investor ecosystem rather than typical early Diagram-led checks.
