Dispersion Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Dispersion Capital is a specialist early-stage venture firm that invests in infrastructure for decentralized intelligence. Its stated view is that AI is becoming a democratizing force: models are getting cheaper, more open and more widely distributed, so intelligence becomes abundant and coordination becomes the scarce layer. As software moves from generating outputs to taking action, the resulting internet will be heterogeneous by default, with many models, agents, data sources, networks, chains and currencies. That world needs identity, authority, memory, routing, execution, verification and settlement across systems that do not share one operator. Dispersion backs the companies that build those layers, and says it invests "before the category exists", when technical necessity is rising faster than commercial consensus.
The firm organizes its pitch around four verbs: Decentralize, Develop, Deploy, Democratize. In practice that spans open-source AI, edge and distributed compute, cryptography (zero-knowledge, verification, privacy), blockchain base layers and programmable money (stablecoins and machine-native payments). The firm began in 2022 as a web3 infrastructure fund ("multi-chain, multi-currency, multi-platform") and has since reframed toward AI agents plus crypto rails, which is visible in its newer portfolio (Kite AI, Sahara AI, PIN AI, Sentient, Tensorblock, ARO Network, AMMO AI).
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed only. The portfolio page tags each company with its first-invested stage (Pre-Seed or Seed). Follow-on participation in later rounds is visible in third-party data, for example Kite AI's $18M Series A in September 2025, where Dispersion participated alongside PayPal Ventures, General Catalyst and others.
Check Size
Not published. The firm's first fund is $40M and targets pre-seed and seed rounds, which implies small initial checks, but no range is stated on the website or in press, so none is recorded.
Lead Tendency
Unknown. Third-party round listings show Dispersion mostly appearing in syndicates next to other funds (Samsung Next, Hack VC, Symbolic Capital, Anagram, Alumni Ventures), and rarely as a named lead. The evidence is not strong enough to call it either way.
Recent Activity
- Fund I of $40M was announced in May 2023 for pre-seed and seed decentralized infrastructure. LPs included Circle Ventures, Ripple, Alchemy Ventures, WeMade and NGC, plus individual GPs. About 10% had been deployed at announcement.
- Kite AI raised an $18M Series A in September 2025, led by PayPal Ventures and General Catalyst, with Dispersion participating. Dispersion was an early (pre-seed) investor.
- ARO Network raised a $2.1M pre-seed in July 2025 with Dispersion participating.
- The Bastion listing was added to the portfolio page in May 2026 (seed, financial infrastructure), the most recent addition seen.
Fund status looks like actively deploying, based on new portfolio additions through 2026. No second fund has been announced publicly.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists about 46 companies, nearly all categorized as Infrastructure, with a few Platform and Financial Infrastructure names. Companies first backed at pre-seed or seed include 0G Labs, Kite AI, Sahara AI, Berachain, Chaos Labs, Primus, Pharos Network, Space and Time, Lava Protocol, Activeloop, Artela, Argus Labs, Cube3, Sentient, PIN AI, Tensorblock, ARO Network, AMMO AI and Bastion. A group tagged under earlier or prior investments includes Alchemy, Dapper Labs, Flow, Forte, Stacks, Cast.AI, Risc Zero, Moralis and Metrika; these appear to be investments made before Dispersion's own fund (the Managing Partner's earlier career), and no stage is recorded for them.
Exit: Alterya was acquired by Chainalysis (noted on the firm's portfolio listing; date not verified).
Team
- Patrick Chang, Founder and Managing Partner: about two decades in technology finance and venture. Previously invested at Samsung NEXT, Cota Capital, Investor Growth Capital, Bain Capital Ventures and Foundation Capital, and began in tech investment banking and M&A at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers. Founded Dispersion in 2022.
- Third-party data (Tracxn) also lists venture partners (Matt Cheng, David Eun, Pierre Arys, Roham Gharegozlou). These are not on the firm's own team page, so they are not recorded as team members.
Decision Process
The website names one investing principal, Patrick Chang, so decisions appear to run through the Managing Partner, with venture partners and technical practitioners helping evaluate architecture and adoption risk. This is an inference and is not stated explicitly.
Founder Preferences
Technical founders building systems before they are an established category. The firm says it works with founders on category definition, product strategy, enterprise adoption, go-to-market, partnerships, financing and, where relevant, network and token design. It stresses that infrastructure has to survive security review, procurement, compliance and latency and cost limits.
Geographic Focus
Primarily US-based companies, per Patrick Chang in 2023, with about a quarter of active investments in Israel at that time and growing interest in Asia (especially zero-knowledge builders). The portfolio also includes teams in Korea, Singapore and Europe.
Gaps
No stated check size, no headquarters location, no second fund. Portfolio stage data comes from the firm's portfolio page; stage is left blank for companies tagged to earlier investments. The portfolio page paginates client-side (4 pages); the full list was read from the site's WordPress portfolio feed, and the image captions on the page itself were unreadable.
