Droia Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Droia Ventures is a specialist biotech investor with an exclusive focus on therapeutics for oncology and genetic disease. It invests globally in newly founded or early-stage drug development companies that use novel science and platform technologies to pursue first-in-class drug candidates. The firm says it only backs companies that can go after previously unsolvable clinical problems, and it measures success by effective patient benefit: the severity of the unmet medical need and the improvement over the expected standard of care.
Droia describes itself as a hands-on investor and entrepreneur. Its in-house team of drug development experts supports portfolio companies from company creation through clinical proof of concept, and team members will take on interim roles inside companies to get them off the ground faster. Droia has built many companies from the ground up, either by creating a new company around promising science or by investing in an existing young company.
Stage Focus
Droia targets newly founded and early-stage platform companies, from company creation and seed through Series A and B rounds. Recent portfolio financings it announced include Alesta Therapeutics (EUR 65M Series A, January 2025), Hillstar Bio ($67M Series A, March 2025), Judo Bio ($100M launch financing, October 2024), Protego ($130M Series B, December 2025), Unnatural Products ($45M Series B, March 2026) and Vaderis ($152M Series B, August 2026). The firm is typically part of larger syndicates, and the firm has not published its own check size.
Check Size
Droia does not publish check sizes. Stated fund sizes give the scale: the Droia Genetic Disease fund closed at EUR 220M in May 2021 to make roughly twelve to thirteen investments, which implies initial checks in the low double-digit millions of euros with follow-on reserves. Total assets under management were stated as over EUR 450M (about USD 550M) in 2021. Check size is not stated by the firm and is left unset here.
Lead Tendency
Droia often creates or co-founds companies and sits on boards, which suggests it leads or co-leads early rounds. Later rounds such as the Vaderis Series B and the Protego Series B are large syndicated financings in which Droia participates as an existing investor. Lead tendency is recorded as both.

Decision Process
The firm is a partnership, with managing partners for oncology and genetic disease and an Investment Advisory Board of external scientists. Droia invests through separate oncology and genetic disease funds run in parallel.
Founder Preferences
Scientific founders and teams with differentiated platforms or scientific insight that can reach clinical breakthrough. Droia will also create the company with the scientists and take interim management roles. It is not a fit for non-therapeutic life science, devices or software.
