DRW Venture Capital Research
Investment Thesis
DRW Venture Capital is the corporate venture arm of DRW, the Chicago-based diversified trading firm founded by Don Wilson. The group launched in 2011 and invests under the line "We invest in what we know": financial technology and enterprise technology companies where DRW's trading expertise, client relationships and engineering depth add value beyond the check. DRW has no outside investors, so the VC arm invests the firm's own capital and describes itself as thoughtful but nimble in deploying it.
The firm only invests in arenas it knows well and often had a direct hand in helping build. In practice that means market infrastructure, trading and data technology, crypto and digital-asset infrastructure, compliance and surveillance tooling, and a small number of adjacent enterprise or compute plays.
Stage Focus
DRWVC calls itself stage agnostic, from early-stage startups through pre-IPO companies, and says it supports companies from the initial investment through follow-on rounds to exit. Its own screening criteria lean later than the label suggests: it looks for management teams that have already achieved significant commercial traction, measured by revenue of $5M or more, with institutional deal terms and thoughtful governance.
Check Size
The site lists a first check of $1M to $5M+. As a balance-sheet investor with no fund life, it can keep supporting companies through follow-on financings.
Lead Tendency
It either leads a round or joins a syndicate. A stated must-have is investing alongside other value-add investors. Most deals are sourced through a large network of co-investors and internally through DRW employees, who are encouraged to introduce companies.
