Embryo Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Embryo Ventures is a London-based early-stage venture firm (office at 35 Berkeley Square, Mayfair, with a stated London and Berlin presence) that describes itself as "Venture Capital for Life." Its philosophy is that true progress is human at its core, and it organizes its investing around two lenses: human health and human experience. On the health side it backs three kinds of technology: surgical, procedural and diagnostic innovations that correct acute dysfunction; longitudinal technologies that stabilize chronic conditions through continuous monitoring and early detection; and frontier innovations that extend healthspan and expand physical and cognitive performance. On the experience side it invests thematically in the systems that shape daily life, including connectivity, mobility, care, safety and built environments, while staying opportunistic across business models and technologies.
The firm publishes a 2026 thesis with twelve themes across four dimensions: Health Management (real-time observable biology, passive nutrition tracking, unified personal health platforms), Frontier Health (brain-machine interfaces and neuromodulation, high-density rest and recovery, systematic improvement of baseline function), Daily Experience (personal decision-support intelligence, a social operating system for coordination, automation of household chores) and Frontier Experience (direct neural knowledge transfer, human augmentation, cognitive enhancement). It states these are starting points, not boundaries, and invites pitches that do not fit.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed, from pre-product and pre-revenue through commercial launch. The homepage says it operates from pre-seed to Series A, while the 2026 thesis FAQ says pre-seed and seed. Treat Series A as a possible follow-on, not a core entry point.
Check Size
The firm does not publish check sizes. Third-party profiles (OpenVC, Venture Capital Archive, Capboard) list a first check of roughly $50K to $1M, and a range of $10K to $1M. These are unverified aggregator figures, so confidence is low.
Lead Tendency
It leads at least some rounds. In November 2026 it led OSSTEC's $8M round, with Neovate Capital, New Wave Ventures, Oxford Technology Innovation Finance and Empirical Ventures participating. It also participates in rounds led by others, for example Unravel Health's October 2026 pre-seed (co-led by Conduit EIS Impact Fund and Wrightwood) and Gladys's October 2025 round (led by Cornerstone VC). Lead tendency is both.
Recent Activity
- November 2026: led OSSTEC's $8M round to fund FDA clearance and first-in-human US cases of its ASCENT cementless partial knee.
- October 2026: participated in Unravel Health's £2.5M pre-seed for at-home hormone monitoring.
- October 2025: participated in Gladys's £1.5M round for community-based home care.
The news page was last updated 25 March 2026. A third-party tracker (Tracxn, October 2026) shows few recorded rounds, so the firm is a selective, low-volume investor. Fund status is treated as actively deploying given the two most recent investments.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists twelve named companies plus one undisclosed stealth company: Pluvo (air purification and out-of-home advertising totems, London), Thermulon (scalable aerogel insulation, Durham), The Cheeky Panda (bamboo tissue products, London), Laka (community-based e-mobility insurance, London), BioLumen (cellulosic foam nutrition technology, San Francisco), TasteIndex (taste recommendation AI, Rotterdam), Calla Lily Clinical Care (leak-free vaginal drug delivery, London), OSSTEC (3D-printed porous metal orthopaedic implants, London), Staxy (corporate mobility-as-a-service, London), Gladys (community care marketplace, London), Bridgefy (offline mesh-network messaging, Miami), IMPLI (implantable hormone biosensor, Delaware) and Unravel Health (at-home multi-hormone saliva monitor, London). The mix is heavily medical devices, women's health and hormone monitoring, with older investments in consumer, mobility and materials. No exits are listed on the site.
Team
The website does not list its team. The only named person found is Dr Arash Moavenian, Chief Executive, quoted in the November 2026 OSSTEC announcement. A data aggregator shows a GP/MD profile with a thesis statement on healthtech, deeptech and frontier innovation, but no name. Team coverage is a gap and should be filled from LinkedIn.
Decision Process
Not published. Founders submit through a pitch form and the firm says it reviews and responds to every submission. It also runs an EV Scouts program. Treat as a small partnership with a single CEO-led decision; confidence is low.
Founder Preferences
Intellectually intensive founders with deep expertise (clinicians, academics, deep-tech scientists, as seen in OSSTEC, Thermulon and BioLumen), building human-first products. The values page stresses relationships first, operating as one team with founders, conviction at the earliest stages and quality over scale.
Geographic Focus
Most active in the UK, Europe and the US, with opportunistic investments globally. Portfolio headquarters skew London, with others in Durham, Rotterdam, San Francisco, Miami and Delaware.
