Pacific Channel Research
Investment Thesis
Pacific Channel is a specialist deep-tech venture capital firm founded in Auckland, New Zealand in 2004. The firm's thesis is "investing in great people using breakthrough science and advanced engineering to create transformative impact." It backs researchers, founders, and entrepreneurs who have identified meaningful science or unique engineering solutions to complex, global challenges across the future of food, health, and the environment. Pacific Channel positions itself as a long-term, active partner rather than a passive check-writer, providing capital, technical expertise, commercialization support, and network access to help deep-tech IP move from lab to global market.
Sector Focus
Three core pillars anchor the portfolio:
- Health: diagnostics, medical devices, and imaging technology aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and outcomes (e.g. Orbis Diagnostics, Mars Bioimaging, Kitea Health, Upstream Medical Technologies)
- Agriculture / Food: agritech and livestock-health technology supporting sustainable nutrition for a growing population (e.g. Hectre, Bovonic, CropX, Nanobubble Agritech, Pheromite, Mastaplex)
- Environment / Climate: clean energy, materials science, and waste-to-value technology (e.g. Green Gravity, Aquila, NILO, Avertana, Xefco, TasmanIon)
In May 2026 the firm broadened its climate-tech footprint by acquiring ENGIE Factory APAC's seven-company early-stage portfolio (solar, cooling, climate markets, sustainable housing, bioenergy, data-center efficiency), standing up a new Singapore-based unit, Pacific Channel Climate Ventures.
Stage Focus
Pacific Channel invests from pre-seed through Series A, with selective follow-on into later rounds for existing portfolio companies (e.g. the $13M Series A co-lead in NILO). It has historically been the first institutional check for many deep-tech spinouts commercializing university or CRI-originated IP.
Check Size
Disclosed deal sizes range roughly from ~NZ$940K (Bovonic) up to $13M (NILO Series A, co-led with Inter IKEA Group), with $2M-$6M being a common range for Series A-stage leads (Upstream Medical Technologies $2M, Kitea Health $6M). No fixed check-size band is published on the website.
Lead Tendency
Pacific Channel frequently leads or co-leads rounds for companies it backs at seed/Series A (Kitea Health, Upstream Medical Technologies, Bovonic, NILO), consistent with its self-description as an active, hands-on investor.
Recent Activity
The firm is actively deploying across multiple vehicles: Fund IV (Australia, launched 2025 with LaunchVic support), Fund V (dedicated to Kākāriki Renewables' large-scale NZ renewable energy and storage projects, launched August 2025), and Australasia's first VC Capital Continuation Fund (launched November 2024). In September 2025 the firm marked its 20-year anniversary, citing 67 companies backed, 11 successful exits, 1,000+ high-value jobs created, and $125M+ under management. Most recent disclosed activity: an investment in diagnostics company Orbis Diagnostics (August 2026) and the ENGIE Factory APAC acquisition/Singapore expansion (May 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
Eleven exits to date, including Quantifi Photonics (sold to Nasdaq-listed Teradyne, March 2025). Active/notable companies span Mars Bioimaging (FDA 510(k) clearance for a portable photon-counting CT scanner, March 2026), Kitea Health (implantable long-term brain pressure sensor), Green Gravity (gravitational energy storage in legacy mineshafts), Transparently.AI (fraud-detection AI, co-invested with Move Asset Management and Franklin Templeton), and Conry Tech (Australian air-conditioning startup, co-invested with Bandera Capital). Several portfolio companies were named to the Cleantech 50 to Watch list in 2024.
Team
Pacific Channel is led by Managing Partner and co-founder Brent Ogilvie, a former NZ Trade Commissioner with a track record founding or directing ten deep-tech start-ups. The investment committee is chaired by Dr Gary Pace, a serial life-sciences entrepreneur and MIT-trained scientist. Prof Cather Simpson (University of Auckland physicist and co-founder of several portfolio companies) and Dr Roland Toder lead scientific/technical diligence. Samantha Ng and Tim van Vliet head the firm's Australian and Southeast Asian expansions respectively, and a bench of venture partners and advisors (Paul Muckleston, ex-Microsoft; Jaco Pretorius, ex-defense-tech consultant; Dr David Rowe, ex-1835i/ANZ; Andrew J. Nash, serial operator) supports sector-specific commercialization.
Decision Process
Investment decisions run through a formal Investment Committee chaired by Dr Gary Pace, reflecting a partnership-style governance model typical of an institutional deep-tech fund rather than a solo-GP structure.
Founder Preferences
The firm explicitly looks for founders "enthusiastic about execution, not just the idea," and experienced management teams capable of hitting commercialization milestones — a preference consistent with its focus on IP-heavy, technically complex ventures spun out of universities and research institutes.
Geographic Focus
Historically Australia and New Zealand, with a 2024 expansion into Australia (first offshore expansion by an NZ-based VC) and a 2026 expansion into Singapore/Southeast Asia via the ENGIE Factory APAC acquisition. Portfolio companies are supported in expanding into the US, Europe, and broader Asia as they scale.
