First Harmonic Research
Investment Thesis
First Harmonic is a small, early-stage venture fund founded by Ali Rowghani (former Twitter CFO/COO, former Pixar CFO, and a 10-year Y Combinator partner) that pairs capital with a free, non-dilutive go-to-market program for seed-stage founders. The firm's core belief, drawn from Rowghani's operating career and codified in the team's public writing (e.g. "Choose your customer"), is that the single highest-leverage early-stage decision is defining a narrow initial ideal customer profile, and that most founders need hands-on help getting there. First Harmonic raised an early-stage fund specifically to underwrite the cost of running this program so that participation carries no investment strings attached.
Stage Focus
First Harmonic invests at pre-seed and seed, occasionally following on into Series A/B rounds of standout portfolio companies (e.g. Actively AI's Series B, Poetic's and AIUC's Series A rounds). The go-to-market program itself is explicitly built for seed-stage founders.
Check Size
Per third-party reporting on partner JJ Fliegelman, First Harmonic typically writes checks between $150K and $2M into seed and pre-seed companies, with larger follow-on participation in later rounds of existing portfolio companies.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. First Harmonic has co-led rounds (Actively AI's $45M Series B alongside TCV) and describes itself internally as a co-lead on Poetic's $50M Series A, though press coverage credits Kleiner Perkins as the lead there. In smaller rounds (AIUC's Series A, Simple AI's raise, Pam's funding), First Harmonic appears as a participating investor alongside a designated lead.
Recent Activity
The firm publicly launched in June 2025 after running its go-to-market program privately since 2023 (six cohorts, ~50 founders, reported NPS of 100). Since then it has been actively deploying:
- September 2026: Participated in AIUC's $40M Series A (led by Ribbit Capital)
- April 2026: Co-led Actively AI's $45M Series B (with TCV)
- June 2026: Participated in Poetic's $50M Series A (led by Kleiner Perkins, with OpenAI and Founders Fund)
- February 2026: Invested $14M alongside Y Combinator in Simple AI
- August 2025: Participated in a funding round for Pam, an AI platform for auto dealerships (led by Autotech Ventures)
Portfolio Highlights
Notable named portfolio companies include AIUC (Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company, building confidence infrastructure and insurance for AI agents), Actively AI (AI-powered B2B revenue/sales platform), Poetic (enterprise process automation, formerly Forge, backed at a $500M valuation by Kleiner Perkins and OpenAI), Simple AI (voice AI sales agents), Skillset, and Kobalt Labs. Ali Rowghani has separately made notable angel investments in Mercor, Decagon, and Cursor prior to and alongside First Harmonic's institutional activity.

Decision Process
Small-partnership model (Rowghani, Fliegelman, Mabanta, and team jointly source and evaluate), consistent with the firm's small, hands-on team structure.
Founder Preferences
First Harmonic explicitly selects go-to-market program cohorts (10-12 companies each) by nomination only, increasingly from its own program alumni, rather than open applications. This suggests a strong preference for founders who come recommended through trusted networks, particularly technical/operating founders building B2B and AI-native products.
Geographic Focus
Primarily US-based founders, with the firm itself headquartered in San Francisco; portfolio companies span the Bay Area (AIUC) and New York (Actively AI), indicating no strict geographic restriction within the US.
