Flintlock Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Flintlock Capital describes itself as an entrepreneur-first, early-stage venture firm. Its stated belief is that a great entrepreneur with a good idea will outperform a great idea with a weak entrepreneur every time, and it says it bets heavily on people even when the idea still needs development. The firm's name is an extended metaphor: flint is capital, the spark is the startup, gunpowder is growth, and the round leaving the barrel is the exit. Its tagline is "Capital to Exit", and it positions itself as helping founders from first check through exit while knowing when to step back.
Sector Focus
The firm treats fintech as a horizontal layer rather than a narrow vertical: new technologies where the end customer is a financial institution, or that institution's members, customers or clients, helping them interact with money or make financial decisions. The site says this includes traditional fintech and can extend as far as space. The portfolio reflects that breadth: lending and consumer finance (SoLo, Thrive Financial, RenoFi), proptech and rental screening (RentCheck), insurance (Sigo Seguros), automotive payments (CarIQ), and infrastructure and compliance tooling (HyperLayer, Valiify, Pull Systems, Stackwell, Greenlyne).
Stage Focus
The site says the typical deal stage is around Series A with minimum investments of $1MM. It also says it has dry powder available from pre-revenue and pre-product through hyper scale, and the firm calls itself early-stage. Press coverage of the first fund (Washington Business Journal, July 2023) described first checks of roughly $750,000 to $1 million in rounds between seed and Series A.
Check Size
- Minimum check stated on the site: $1MM
- First-fund press coverage: about $750K to $1M initial checks
- No maximum check size is published
Lead Tendency
Not stated. Public material shows Flintlock named among participants in rounds (for example RenoFi's Series B, led by Fifth Wall), but the firm does not say whether it leads. Recorded as unknown.
Recent Activity
Flintlock closed a $50 million first fund dedicated to fintech in July 2023, announced via its LinkedIn page and covered by the Washington Business Journal. The portfolio page shows 12 companies, with logos added in 2024 and 2025 (Thrive Financial and SoLo in March 2025, RenoFi and HyperLayer in July 2025). RenoFi announced a $22M Series B led by Fifth Wall with Flintlock participating. No second fund has been announced publicly, so fund status is recorded as unknown.

Team
- Joe Shamess, General Partner: Founder, turnaround CEO and eight years in venture. Board member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and former chair of its Small Business Council. Air Force Academy graduate and 11-year special operations pilot; MBA from Auburn.
- Seda Goff, General Partner: Founder and venture investor since 2014. Former adjunct professor at American University's Kogod School of Business, former City Leader for Bunker Labs DC, and former General Partner for veteran entrepreneurship investment funds at PenFed Credit Union.

Decision Process
Not published. With two general partners the process is most likely a partnership, but this is not stated, so it is left unset in the payload.
Founder Preferences
The firm says it backs founders over ideas and has sat on both sides of the deal table as founders and investors. The GPs have a visible veteran-entrepreneur orientation (Bunker Labs, PenFed veteran funds, military service), though the website does not make that an explicit criterion.
Geographic Focus
Based in Tysons, Virginia (Washington DC area). No geographic restriction is stated; the portfolio includes US companies and Sigo Seguros, which operates in Latin America.
Gaps
No public check-size ceiling, decision process, lead tendency, per-company stage or date, or fund-size beyond the $50M first fund. Research relied on the firm's homepage and about page plus press search results.
