Fluent Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Fluent Ventures is a San Francisco-based global early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2023 by Alexandre (Alex) Lazarow. The firm's core thesis centers on "geographic alpha" — backing founders who replicate proven business models from established markets into new geographies or verticals where those models have not yet taken hold.
The premise is that the world's most valuable startups are often not entirely novel concepts but local adaptations of models that have already succeeded elsewhere. The first breakout neobank was Tinkoff from Russia; that movement scaled globally, inspiring Chime in the U.S. and Banco Neon in Brazil. Lazarow's thesis holds that innovation no longer flows exclusively from Silicon Valley outward; in 2013, just four cities had produced a unicorn — today, that number exceeds 150.
Fluent explicitly backs "camel startups" — businesses focused on real product-market fit and sustainable, profitable growth rather than blitzscaling. The firm screens for genuine local adaptation (not copy-paste cloning), founder-market alignment, and local product-market fit. A representative example: Fluent passed on multiple construction marketplaces globally but backed BRKZ in Saudi Arabia, a localized take on India's Infra.Market, because the founder (a former Careem executive) had deep regional operator credibility in a market with surging infrastructure demand.
Sector Focus
Fluent invests across three primary verticals:
- Fintech: Payments, savings, lending, neobanking, BNPL, spend management, embedded finance, and insurance. The firm's deepest area of focus, with portfolio companies across LatAm (Kueski, Neon, Xepelin, Clara, Kamino), MENA (BRKZ), USA (Chime, Kin, Flychain), SEA (Kredivo), and Africa (Sabi).
- Commerce: B2B ecommerce (Sabi, Matta, BRKZ, Matbook), SME enablement (ZenBusiness, Candosa, Iconic), social commerce (Dealcart), and M&A / generational-transfer platforms (Baton Market, Iconic). Focus on transforming how businesses source, buy, sell, and create ecosystems.
- Healthcare: Improving healthcare access and outcomes through technology. Includes practice management/formation (PRAX Health), direct healthcare (Sidecar Health), healthcare fintech (Flychain), and employee wellness (Minu). Explicitly excludes biotech.
The firm does not invest in pure hardware, biotech, or capital-intensive blitzscale-dependent models.
Stage Focus
Fluent invests from pre-seed through Series A:
- Pre-Seed: $250K for founders with a validated concept and early evidence of model fit
- Seed: $500K–$2M for teams with early product and initial traction
- Series A: Selective, primarily as follow-on to existing portfolio
- Plans to make 22–25 investments per fund, with follow-on reserves
- Ideally invests post some product validation but early in the scaling phase
Check Size
Typical investment range: $250,000 – $2,000,000
Fluent deploys from a $40M Fund I across a direct investment vehicle, an incubator component, and a structured co-investment vehicle with LPs. This structure enables direct investments and co-investments alongside the network of 75+ unicorn founders.
Lead Tendency
Fluent can lead, co-lead, or co-invest depending on the opportunity. The firm is collaborative by design and likes to partner with local funds in target geographies. LPs — 75+ unicorn founders and VCs including David Vélez (Nubank), Nick Nash (Sea Group), Akshay Garg (Kredivo), Sean Harper (Kin), and Matt Newcomb (Chime) — regularly co-invest alongside Fluent. The firm states 100% of deals are completed with community input from this network.

Decision Process
Fluent operates as a partnership with Managing Partner and Venture Partners contributing to investment decisions. The firm begins with active discovery and trend-mapping of global startup ecosystems, looking to understand business models and geographies deeply. It invests post product validation, moving quickly once conviction is established. The firm likes to partner with local funds and can lead, co-lead, or co-invest.
Deal flow comes heavily from the LP network of 75+ unicorn founders and VCs. The firm states 100% of deals are completed with community input from this network — LPs help validate opportunities, provide market context, and often co-invest alongside Fluent.
Founder Preferences
Fluent looks for founders who:

- Have experience at successful regional startups, established corporates, or global tech companies
- Understand nuanced local adaptation: pricing, regulation, culture, and distribution channels
