Investment Thesis
FoundersEdge is a pre-seed venture capital firm based in Massachusetts and Connecticut, co-founded by two exited entrepreneurs, Greg Raiz and Jess Lynch. The firm's core thesis is that "UX is the new defensibility" — as AI commoditizes the cost of building software, the competitive moat shifts to user experience and the quality of human-AI interaction design. They seek to back AI-native software companies where seamless, customer-obsessed UX is the primary differentiator.
The firm targets what they describe as "first checks into AI-native software companies at the intersection of AI and UX." They are specifically interested in legacy industries still operating on spreadsheets or manual processes, where software with excellent UX can create durable advantages.
Stage Focus
FoundersEdge invests exclusively at the pre-seed stage. They position themselves as true first institutional investors, writing first checks before subsequent institutional rounds. They do not invest at seed, Series A, or later stages, though they maintain reserves for pro-rata follow-on rights in existing portfolio companies.
Check Size
Typical check size is approximately $150K–$200K for initial investments. The firm leads rounds or co-invests alongside other pre-seed funds. They have catalyzed over $100M+ in follow-on capital for portfolio companies from their co-investor network of 250+ investors.
Lead Tendency
FoundersEdge typically leads or co-leads pre-seed rounds. Greg Raiz and Jess Lynch are first-check investors by design, though they actively bring in co-investors from their LP and co-investor network.
Founder Preferences
FoundersEdge has a strong preference for experienced, multi-time founders. Their portfolio is dominated by 2x, 3x, and even 9x founders. Key criteria include:
- Domain insight earned the hard way — founders with deeply-earned, non-obvious problem understanding.
- Demonstrated product instinct — ability to ship and iterate before significant funding.
- Clear user identification — specific user persona clarity before broad market analysis.
- Traction signal discrimination — ability to distinguish genuine early traction from noise.
The firm employs a proprietary tool called the Founder Index, which uses founder psychology data and AI to quantitatively assess founder aptitude. Built from surveys of hundreds of founders, it attempts to measure genuine entrepreneurial aptitude rather than proxy signals (e.g., prestigious schools or employer history). FoundersEdge actively works to ensure this tool reduces bias rather than encoding privilege.
Sector Focus
FoundersEdge invests broadly in AI-enabled B2B software with a strong UX component. Key areas of interest include:
- AI-enabled workflow automation for legacy industries (insurance, medical devices, legal, hospitality)
- Marketing technology powered by AI agents
- Relationship intelligence and networking tools
- Developer-facing or enterprise AI application platforms
- Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AI discoverability
- Content creation and video AI
The firm has no explicit sector exclusions for their AI/UX thesis, though they tend to avoid deep tech, biotech, hardware, and consumer social.
Geographic Focus
FoundersEdge invests nationally across the United States. The firm is headquartered in the Boston, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut area (the partners are based in both cities). They do not restrict investments by geography within the US.
Decision Process
As a two-GP partnership, investment decisions are made jointly by Jess Lynch and Greg Raiz. The firm does not have a formal investment committee beyond the two partners. They are known for high-touch, personal engagement with founders rather than programmatic cohort models.
