Frumtak Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Frumtak Ventures is Iceland's leading early-stage venture capital firm, investing in local innovation with global potential. Founded to back Icelandic entrepreneurs who have demonstrated early traction and have the potential to become global category leaders, the firm takes a concentrated, high-conviction, and high-involvement approach. Rather than spreading capital thinly across a large number of bets, Frumtak dedicates itself to working collaboratively and closely with a focused portfolio of companies from the seed stage all the way through to IPO or acquisition. The firm frames itself explicitly as a partner rather than a passive check-writer, aiming to add value from day one of a deal closing.
Sector Focus
Frumtak is a generalist early-stage investor by Icelandic-market necessity but shows recurring conviction in a handful of areas: enterprise/B2B SaaS and workflow software (50skills, Data Dwell, Optise), fintech and digital health/therapeutics (Meniga, Sidekick Health, Plaio), logistics, fleet, and supply-chain software (Ankeri, MyDello, Controlant), HR-tech and workplace tools (50skills, Alda), mobility and industrial/manufacturing technology (Arctic Trucks, Euler), and consumer/media brands with international IP potential (Tulipop, Smitten, Heima). A growing share of recent deals (Optise, Euler, Heima, Treble) are explicitly AI-powered products, reflecting increasing interest in applied AI and AI-native tooling.
Stage Focus
Frumtak invests across the full lifecycle from seed through IPO, but its sweet spot is pre-seed through Series A, where its initial ticket size of €1-3 million (~$1.1M-$3.2M) is deployed as either a sole lead or co-lead. The firm reserves capital to follow on into later rounds for existing portfolio companies (e.g., Meniga's Series D, Sidekick Health's Series B, Treble's Series A).
Check Size
Typical initial investment: €1M-€3M (~$1.1M-$3.2M). Frumtak frequently leads or co-leads pre-seed and seed rounds in the $1M-$4M range and has participated in larger growth rounds (AviLabs €8M, Treble Series A €11M/$18M extension) as a follow-on investor.
Lead Tendency
Frumtak leads the large majority of its announced rounds — its own press releases repeatedly use "Frumtak leads" language (Optise, Heima, Moombix, AviLabs, Abler, Alda/Empower) — and it also co-leads alongside regional peers (Kvanted on Euler, Eyrir Venture Management on Activity Stream, Superhero Capital on MyDello).
Recent Activity
Frumtak closed its fourth fund, Frumtak IV, in July 2024 at roughly €80M/$87M, targeting Icelandic startups in AI, software, and deep tech; the firm is actively deploying from this vehicle. 2025-2026 activity has been steady: pre-seed rounds in Heima ($1M, March 2025) and Optise (€2M, April 2025), a co-led pre-seed in Euler (€2M, November 2025), a funding round in logistics startup MyDello (€3.1M, December 2025), and most recently an $18M raise by portfolio company Treble to expand its audio/voice development platform for physical AI (September 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
Frumtak's active portfolio spans roughly 20 companies including fintech pioneer Meniga, digital therapeutics leader Sidekick Health (raised $55M Series B), acoustic-simulation platform Treble Technologies, maritime fleet software Ankeri (partnered with Hapag-Lloyd), and children's IP brand Tulipop. Its notable realized exits include Kaptio (travel platform, acquired by VEX Private Equity Fund; first invested 2016), DataMarket (acquired by Qlik Technologies/NASDAQ: QLIK in 2015), MainManager (acquired by View Software, 2020), Trackwell (acquired by private investors, 2019), AGR Dynamics (acquired by VEX Private Equity Fund, 2021), and Valka (high-performance fish-processing tech, acquired by private investors, 2018).

Decision Process
Frumtak runs a five-step process: an initial no-deck-required email introduction, several exploratory meetings on market and business model, a pitch to the full partner group and board of business-leader advisors, team-based due diligence, and a consensus-driven investment decision. Founders pitch to the whole partnership plus the board rather than a single GP, consistent with a partnership-style decision process.
Founder Preferences
Frumtak looks for founders who have already shown early traction and have credible potential to become global category leaders from an Icelandic base — a recurring pattern across its portfolio of technical/product founders (Meniga, Treble, Controlant) as well as domain-expert operators bringing category experience (Sidekick Health in digital health, Arctic Trucks in vehicle engineering).
Geographic Focus
Frumtak invests primarily in Iceland-based companies, with explicit willingness to back international expansion as portfolio companies scale (e.g., Moombix's UK market entry, AviLabs' international airline customers, Ankeri's partnership with Germany's Hapag-Lloyd).
