FundersClub Research
Investment Thesis
FundersClub bills itself as the world's first online venture capital firm, founded in March 2012 by Wharton classmates Alex Mittal and Boris Silver. The firm's model is to use software and a large community of accredited investors to source, vet, fund, and support the most promising early-stage startups, then give retail-scale accredited investors access to venture deals that were traditionally reserved for institutional LPs and insiders. FundersClub is highly selective, funding fewer than 2% of the companies it reviews, and pairs that selectivity with an internal Investment Committee and a panel of 270+ experienced startup operators who weigh in on prospective deals. Sourcing comes from a mix of relationships with accelerators (notably Y Combinator) and top-tier funds (e.g., First Round Capital), superangel networks, member referrals, and its own data-driven deal-scouting tools.
Stage Focus
The firm concentrates on Seed and early Series A investing, with selective follow-on participation into later rounds (Series B and beyond) for its strongest portfolio companies. Historically the firm has also funded pre-seed and early-stage rounds across a wide range of technology sectors.
Check Size
FundersClub's platform allows individual accredited investors to participate in a deal with minimums as low as $3,000, and the firm has said initial investment rounds on the platform typically mobilize on the order of $250,000 in aggregate from its community. The firm's own per-deal check size at the fund level is not publicly disclosed with precision, so it is treated as unknown here rather than guessed.
Lead Tendency
FundersClub both leads and participates in rounds depending on the deal. Recent activity shows it leading smaller seed rounds directly (e.g., Momentic's $3.7M seed) while also appearing as one of several participating investors in larger, syndicated rounds (e.g., Scape's YC/General Catalyst-backed seed, and FORT Robotics' Tiger Global-led Series B).
Recent Activity
FundersClub remains an active investor as of mid-2026. Recent, source-backed activity includes: a follow-on/participating investment in FORT Robotics' $18.9M Series B (August 2025, led by Tiger Global); a seed investment in cloud-security startup SubImage's $4.2M round (November 2025); a seed investment in AI-testing startup Momentic's $3.7M round, which FundersClub led (March 2025); an exit when portfolio company Leapfin was acquired by Airwallex (June 2026); a seed investment in AI CRM-automation startup Ergo (June 2026); and a seed investment in Stockholm-based AI inbox startup Scape's $3.2M round alongside Y Combinator and General Catalyst (July 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
FundersClub has invested in 400+ companies since 2012 and counts roughly 30 exits. Marquee outcomes and well-known names in the portfolio include Coinbase (IPO), Instacart (IPO), Flexport, GitLab (IPO), Webflow, Substack, Rippling, DoorDash (exit via acquisition of a portfolio stake), Slack (acquired by Salesforce), Greenhouse (acquired), Bitso, DrChrono, Solugen, Qventus, EasyPost, and Leapfin (acquired by Airwallex in 2026). Newer portfolio bets span fintech, developer/cloud-security tooling, robotics safety, and AI-native productivity software.
