Impulsum Research
Overview
Impulsum (brand: Impulsum Venture Colab, investing arm: Impulsum Ventures) is a Santa Monica, California firm founded in 2019 by Edward "Ed" Wilson and Adam Neff. It runs two businesses side by side: a seed-stage venture fund and a digital product studio (Impulsum Studio) of roughly 30 engineers, designers and product specialists spread across Santa Monica, Barcelona and Medellín. The website describes the two halves plainly: the Studio "crafts modern digital solutions for high value problems in complex and uncharted market segments," and Ventures "invests in transformative companies disrupting established markets or pioneering new ones created by shifts in regulation, technology, and culture." The firm's tagline is "Rocket fuel for high-impact ideas."
Disambiguation: this is not the Medellín-based "Impulsum Ventures" seed group that backs Colombian startups (Sempli, Vozy; partners Felipe Mora Sarria and Carlos Esteban Villa). Crunchbase, Teaserclub and Dealroom profiles for "Impulsum Ventures" describe that Colombian group. The US firm on impulsum.vc is the one researched here.
Investment Thesis
In Ed Wilson's words on the LA Venture podcast (March 2022), Impulsum is "seed investors who have operational expertise, and because we also run a development studio, we can help fill in the gaps along the way." The three focus areas he names are health tech, fintech and consumer, with the studio's "bread and butter" being hard, complex problems in healthcare and fintech. He says the firm does not take a strictly thesis-driven approach and prefers to be surprised by founders who know a space better than the partners do. A recurring product view: B2B software should feel like a consumer product, with delight built into the user experience.
The studio's stated domain expertise (LinkedIn) is complex product experiences: social networks, eCommerce, digital consumer, secure communication, PCI/payments/card issuance, and blockchain. Listed specialties include fintech, welltech, payments, healthcare data and mobile SDKs.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed. Every tracked investment is a pre-seed or seed round (Uplinq pre-seed 2022; HealNow, Aware Health, EDGE Markets and The Beans seed rounds; CalmWave and Bonfire Analytics early venture rounds). Tracxn classifies all six of its tracked deals as seed.
Check Size
Around $500K per company, per Ed Wilson in 2022 ("with our fund size, we're usually writing checks around half a million or so"). Fund size and AUM are not public.
Lead Tendency
Mostly a participant rather than a lead. In every announced round found, another firm led: Third Prime (CalmWave), Boomerang Ventures (Aware Health), Bonfire Ventures (HealNow), Bullpen Capital (EDGE Markets), AZ-VC (Uplinq seed). Impulsum positions itself as an easy firm to "slot in" to a cap table because of its studio support.
Recent Activity
- The Beans (financial operating system for caring professionals): $5.4M seed, announced November 2025, alongside Alloy Alchemist Fund, Commerce Ventures, Precursor Ventures, Swing Ventures and Techstars. This is the latest known investment.
- EDGE Markets / EDGE Boost (FDIC-insured banking for sports bettors): $17.2M seed led by Bullpen Capital, closed late 2024 and announced March 2025. Adam Neff is also Chief Product Officer at EDGE.
- CalmWave (Quiet ICU, alarm-fatigue AI for hospitals): $5.25M round led by Third Prime, November 2024.
- Aware Health (value-based musculoskeletal care for self-insured employers): $3M seed led by Boomerang Ventures, October 2024.
- Bonfire Analytics (AI sales intelligence for healthtech): $2M oversubscribed first venture round, February 2024.
- HealNow (online payments for pharmacies): $5.5M seed led by Bonfire Ventures, September 2023.
Tracxn records no new first-round investments in 2025 or 2026, but press confirms The Beans in late 2025, so the fund is still writing checks at a slow pace of roughly one to four new companies a year.
Portfolio Highlights
- CalmWave (Seattle, hospital operations AI)
- Aware Health (MSK care)
- HealNow (pharmacy payments)

- EDGE Markets / EDGE Boost (fintech for sports bettors)
- Uplinq (Toronto, AI bookkeeping and SMB credit signals)
- The Beans (fintech for caregivers)

The portfolio is heavily weighted to digital health and fintech infrastructure. No public exits were found.
Team
- Edward (Ed) Wilson, Co-Founder and Managing Partner. Previously about nine years at Anthos Capital and a consultant at BlueRock. Columbia master's in real estate development, Occidental undergrad. Former sponsored skateboarder, involved with The Skatepark Project and the Venice Beach skatepark. Owns the traditional VC network and Series A introductions.
- Adam Neff, Co-Founder, Managing Partner and President. More than 20 years building products; led ventures including Causes, Tuenti, Ledge and Apto Payments. USC Marshall. Also Chief Product Officer at EDGE Markets. Wilson calls him the firm's product savant.
- Tracxn also lists studio staff (Takeichi Kanzaki Cabrera, Rob Tyrrell, Anna Bordas, Reyaz Kassamali) with partner or principal titles; their investing roles are unconfirmed.
Decision Process
A two-partner firm. Wilson and Neff have known each other since college and make decisions together; they describe complementary skill sets (Wilson on network and finance, Neff on product and technical detail). Studio designers and product people support diligence.
Founder Preferences
Wilson describes his style as "just love" rather than tough love, relationship-first and informal, with frequent unstructured founder calls rather than formal board meetings. At seed he weighs people over data. The firm likes founders tackling complex, regulated problems in healthcare and fintech where the studio's product, UX and compliance experience helps. Studio work is optional: portfolio companies can get free advice and teardowns, and larger builds are scoped and priced like any outside agency, with the partners taking no profit from portfolio studio work.
Geographic Focus
Primarily United States, with one Canadian investment (Uplinq, Toronto). Portfolio companies are spread across Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia and Lafayette, so there is no strict regional limit. The studio has offices in Santa Monica, Barcelona and Medellín, but the fund's investments are US and Canada.
Gaps
- No fund size, AUM or fund vintage published.
- The website has no portfolio or team page (/portfolio, /about and /team return 404); the portfolio was built from press releases and databases.
- Lead or board involvement is not documented; Tracxn reports no board seats.
