InterVest Research
Investment Thesis
InterVest is one of Korea's largest independent venture capital firms, founded in 1999 and operating for over 25 years. The firm's stated philosophy centers on "courage": objectively evaluating risk, confronting fear rather than avoiding it, and preparing in advance for shifts in the capital markets, a framing the firm draws explicitly from Melville's Moby Dick. InterVest looks for technology-oriented startups with defensible barriers to entry, businesses that can scale from Korea into global markets, companies that operate independently of conglomerate (chaebol) patronage, and models capable of exponential rather than linear growth. The firm positions itself as a long-term growth partner rather than a purely financial investor, providing portfolio companies with follow-on fundraising support, help entering overseas markets, and introductions to corporate partners.
Sector Focus
InterVest organizes its focus into two primary verticals plus a cross-border mandate:
ICT: artificial intelligence, fintech, the metaverse, energy/ESG, semiconductors, platform businesses, mobility, "smart society," space tech, and DeFi/CeFi and NFT-adjacent Web3 infrastructure.
Bio: novel therapeutic modalities and platforms, the impact of big data and AI on drug discovery, and genome-based precision medicine.
Global: InterVest explicitly positions itself as a bridge connecting the Korean and international startup ecosystems, including a dedicated Southeast Asia vehicle (the InterVest-Kejora fund) and a Malaysia-focused open-innovation fund raised in 2024.
In practice, the current portfolio skews heavily toward AI semiconductors and NPU/accelerator design (Rebellions, FuriosaAI, Mobilint, Nextchip, Panmnesia), foundation-model and enterprise AI platforms (Upstage, Allganize, Liner), AI-driven education (Riiid, Mathpresso, Hodoo English), robotics and automation (Holiday Robotics, Superbin, Clobot, WI Robotics), fintech (Banksalad, Finda, Chai, StraitsX), and biotech/precision medicine (AimedBio, ABL Bio, Orum Therapeutics).
Stage Focus
InterVest invests across the full lifecycle, from seed through growth and pre-IPO, deploying capital through a portfolio of 18 concurrently managed funds ranging from small sector-specific vehicles (roughly $20-30M) to its largest deep-tech fund (over $200M). It does not present as a strictly early-stage specialist; recent large-fund activity (the IBK Innovation-InterVest Deep Tech Fund II) has concentrated on Series A and growth-stage rounds.
Check Size
Check sizes vary widely by fund and stage. Recent disclosed 2026 deals include a ₩20 billion (~$14M) investment in Rebellions and a ₩24.5 billion (~$17M) investment in Holiday Robotics' Series A, both large by Korean VC standards. Smaller funds write earlier, sub-$1M tickets. Overall range is estimated at $0.5M-$20M per initial check, with meaningful follow-on reserves.
Lead Tendency
InterVest both leads and participates in syndicates depending on fund and check size; recent large deep-tech checks (Rebellions, Holiday Robotics) suggest a willingness to write lead-sized tickets into hot rounds.
Recent Activity
InterVest is in an active fundraising and deployment cycle. In October 2025 it reached soft cap on a new fund targeting ₩280-300 billion ($197-211M), backed by IBK, KDB, the Korea Teachers' Credit Union, Korea Post, and MG Community Credit Cooperative, focused on deep-tech, biotech, and ICT. In H1 2026 it deployed roughly ₩189.8 billion, more than its full-year 2025 total, ranking #2 among Korean VCs by investment volume for the period, driven primarily by its 2023-vintage IBK Innovation-InterVest Deep Tech Fund II (₩309 billion), which alone funded 21 companies for ~₩140 billion in H1 2026. The firm was also selected as a National Pension Service venture-fund GP in April 2026 and won "Best Venture Capital House" at the 2026 Korea Venture Capital Awards for its biotech track record, including a partial monetization of its AimedBio stake (~₩51.8 billion via block trade) and strong marks on ABL Bio and Orum Therapeutics.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable names include Rebellions, FuriosaAI, Mobilint, Nextchip, and Panmnesia in AI semiconductors; Upstage and Allganize in foundation models/enterprise AI; Riiid and Mathpresso in AI edtech (both past unicorn-track companies); Noom (global consumer health) and The Pinkfong Company (Baby Shark) as marquee consumer brands; and ABL Bio, AimedBio, and Orum Therapeutics as biotech successes, several of which are exchange-listed.
Team
InterVest reports roughly 33+ investment and management professionals organized into three investment divisions (ICT-focused Division 1, deep-tech/AI-focused Division 2, and a third division) plus a bio-specific investment unit and a management/back-office team. It is co-led by two Representative Directors (Lee Tae-yong and Woo Chung-hee), with vice presidents and executive directors heading each investment division and specific funds.
Decision Process
InterVest operates with named managing partners per fund (e.g., Lim Jung-hee, Lim Hyung-kyu, Jeon Jin-hwan) reporting into a divisional and firm-wide investment committee structure typical of institutionally backed Korean VCs with government and pension-fund LPs.
Founder Preferences
The firm favors technical founding teams with defensible IP or platform advantages, particularly in deep tech and semiconductors, and prioritizes founders building for global (not just domestic Korean) scale.
Geographic Focus
Primarily South Korea, with a structured secondary focus on Southeast Asia (InterVest-Kejora fund, Malaysia OIF) and selective global consumer/fintech bets (Noom, TrueBalance, StraitsX).
