Latin Leap Research
Investment Thesis
Latin Leap describes itself as a Venture Capital Studio founded in 2019 by Stefan Krautwald, a German-born technology entrepreneur based in Colombia. The firm was started in Singapore, operated in Asia first, and opened its Latin American headquarters in Colombia in 2023. Its stated mission is twofold: to help Spanish-speaking Latin America leapfrog through investments in regional early-stage startups, and to soft-land international tech scale-ups in Latin America, giving them access to corporate partners, investors and local hiring and sales networks. The current homepage frames the thesis as investing in and scaling technology businesses where artificial intelligence and data capabilities drive impact and market growth across the region. Its argument for the region is a population of about 650 million, a roughly $12 trillion economy, a mobile-first middle class, unmet consumer and SME needs, and a rising regional unicorn record (Rappi, Nubank, MercadoLibre).
Sector Focus
The verticals page lists AI, fintech, agtech, proptech, cleantech, mobility, healthtech, HR tech and insurtech. The Fund I strategy page names fintech, healthtech, AI and next-gen retail. The portfolio page groups companies into e-commerce, AI/SaaS, fintech, foodtech/agritech, healthtech, mobility/logistics, proptech, sportstech, traveltech and circular economy. Press coverage of the 2023 launch also named edtech.
Stage Focus and Check Size
Latin Leap invests at pre-seed and seed. Stefan Krautwald's LinkedIn profile gives first checks of roughly $250K to $500K, from pre-seed to seed. The 2023 launch announced a $25M Fund I intended to back about 15 startups over three years, which implies an average of well under $2M per company including follow-ons. Some portfolio entries are partner and SPV investments, as the portfolio page footnotes, so the firm also invests alongside partners rather than only from the main fund. A seed round for TripWip in July 2026 ($4.2M total) lists Latin Leap among several investors, so it participates in syndicates and does not appear to lead every round. Lead tendency is therefore best marked as both, with low confidence.
Geographic Focus
Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile were named at launch, and the homepage and search listings now describe Mexico, Colombia, Chile and the Pacific Alliance, with portfolio companies also in Uruguay (TripWip) and Panama. The firm lists offices or presence in Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Singapore and Spain, and runs programs called Leap2Latam and Asia to Latam that bring Asian and other foreign startups into the region. It is an official market-entry and co-investment partner of Singapore's Enterprise Singapore, its Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Uruguay's ANII.
Recent Activity
In July 2026 the Uruguayan peer-to-peer car rental marketplace TripWip raised a $4.2M seed round with Latin Leap among the investors, to expand in Mexico and Argentina. The portfolio page was updated in 2026 with new logos including Scircle.ai, Alvena and heva, and marks Dapta.ai, Netux and Talkpush as exited. Fund status looks active, with new companies appearing through 2026, though we found no announcement of a Fund II. The firm said it had invested about $5M before its formal Latin America launch, in companies including Habi, Meru, Valoreo, Farmalisto, Cornershop, Elenas, Luable, Talently, Cubo, KB, Vozy, Treggo and Vecindario.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page shows about 25 companies, among them Razor Group, Agrizon, Scircle.ai, Keybe, Vozy, Magneto, Dapta.ai, Alvena, Morado, Cubo, BA CU, DiMuto, Mutuus, Netux, heva, Alfred, PuntoPost, Tennders, Carryt, TripWip, Habi, Fantium, Zuzu Hospitality and Talkpush. Luable (Y Combinator S21) is quoted on the homepage as a founder reference. Habi is a well-known Colombian proptech.
Team and Decision Process
Stefan Krautwald is Managing Partner. His background includes Managing Director of Cdiscount (Grupo Exito), Arvato (Bertelsmann), co-founder of Farmalisto and Dafiti LATAM (Rocket Internet), and co-founder of the US cash-back app Fluz. He is an MSc graduate of WHU and a member of CEAPI. The investment committee, announced at launch and extended in 2024, consists of Madeleine Clavijo (Kushki co-founder), David Geisen (CEO of Mercado Libre Mexico, founder of the Mexican online sales association), Rodrigo Zorrilla (former president of Afore Citibanamex), Paco Ybarra (36 years at Citi, joined in mid-2024) and Pablo Padilla (Columbus Asesores Patrimoniales). Decisions go through this committee, so the process is closer to an investment committee than a solo GP. Nancy Zapata also appears on the team pages, but we could not confirm her title. Third-party listings also name Francisco Ascencion as a partner, which we could not confirm on the firm's own site.
Founder Preferences
Stefan has published portfolio data on founder composition (for example, that most portfolio companies have two founders, with about 14 percent solo founders). Founder testimonials stress help entering the Mexican market, hiring, introductions to the international investor network, and operating support. The firm favors AI-native and B2B technology companies at pre-seed and seed and values founders who can expand across Latin American markets. A warm introduction is not stated as required; the site has a contact form and a contact email.
Gaps
The domain on file (latinleap.co) does not load for readers; the working site is latinleap.vc. The press page lists items by year but did not render titles. Fund size is the 2023 announced target of $25M, not a confirmed close, so AUM was left unset.
