Luminous Ventures Research
Overview
Luminous Ventures (光合创投) is a Shanghai-based venture capital firm formerly known as Lightspeed China Partners. It was founded in 2011 by James Mi, a former Lightspeed Venture Partners partner and ex-head of Google Asia Products, and operated as the China arm of Lightspeed before becoming fully independent. It dropped the Lightspeed name and rebranded to Luminous Ventures in late 2025. Its website reports US$3.7 billion under management, more than 200 portfolio companies, 3 offices and 13 funds. It describes itself as a firm backing top startups at early and growth stages, and as a partner to exceptional entrepreneurs with a global perspective.
Investment Thesis
The firm says it uses its team's deep industry expertise and investment experience to help founders build industry-leading companies while generating strong returns for LPs. Partner bios show where the weight sits today: embodied intelligence and robotics, deep tech, advanced manufacturing, AI applications and AI infrastructure, health tech and biotech, and new energy including fusion and small modular reactors. Earlier vintages produced consumer and internet winners such as Pinduoduo, Meituan and Full Truck Alliance.
Stage Focus
Early and growth stage. News items show the firm leading Angel+ and Pre-A rounds (Weilan Nuenergy), first institutional rounds (Honghu), and Series A+ rounds (Sharpa), and following on through later rounds. Public sources describe the funds as early-stage vehicles.
