MetaVC Partners Research
Investment Thesis
MetaVC Partners is a hard-tech venture fund that backs startups commercializing metamaterials and other advanced materials. Its site says it invests in entrepreneurs who solve big problems and builds businesses on new materials in four markets: imaging and sensors, energy and sustainability, next-generation communications, and faster computer processing power. The partners describe themselves as experienced investors and operators with deep business and technical insight. The firm launched in 2021 as one of the first funds built around metamaterials, which engineer structures at small scales to control light, radio waves and other energy in ways ordinary materials cannot.
Focus Areas
- Imaging and sensors: touchless haptics and hand-tracking systems in medicine, sports and retail, plus metasurface lenses and medical imaging.
- Energy and sustainability: new materials in energy, wireless power, batteries and solar.
- Communications: compact, power-efficient, scalable solutions for 5G/6G and RF or optical satellite communications.
- Computer processing power: optical processing in neural networks for higher clock speeds in imaging, video and AI workloads.
Stage Focus
MetaVC describes itself as an early-stage fund. Its press release on the fund close says it invests in early-stage, hard-tech metamaterials startups. Its public record shows seed rounds (LEADOPTIK, Imagia, Neurophos, Cephia) and Series A or B rounds in companies it backed earlier (Mangata, Lumotive, Kapta Space). The site does not state a check size, so none is recorded here.
Fund and Recent Activity
MetaVC closed its debut fund, MetaVC Partners, LLC, at $62 million in April 2023. Investors include Corning, Gates Frontier and JSR Corporation, along with family offices and institutional pension funds. At launch in 2021 the fund had backing from Bill Gates and Nathan Myhrvold. The firm's news page lists portfolio rounds through October 2026: Kapta Space raised a $24M Series A (Oct 2026), Cephia named a new CEO (Aug 2026), Neurophos raised a $110M Series A (Jan 2026), and LEADOPTIK won FDA approval for its lung biopsy device (Jan 2026). The site does not say which of these rounds MetaVC led, so lead role is recorded as unknown, except LEADOPTIK's May 2023 seed, which the company says MetaVC led.
Portfolio Highlights
- Lumotive: Seattle maker of light-controlling metasurface beam-steering chips for lidar. Raised a $45M Series B in Feb 2025 and has raised more than $100M in total.
- Neurophos: Duke spinout building metamaterial photonic AI inference chips. Raised a $7.2M seed in Dec 2023 and a $110M Series A in Jan 2026.
- Mangata Networks: satellite and edge-computing network. Raised a $33M Series A led by Playground Global in Jan 2022 and $100M in Dec 2022.
- LEADOPTIK: OCT-guided lung biopsy imaging. $5M seed in May 2023 led by MetaVC. FDA approval in Jan 2026.
- Imagia: silicon metalens startup. $4.5M seed in May 2023 with Gates Frontier.
- Kapta Space: Seattle maker of steerable radar sensors for satellites. Exited stealth Feb 2025 and raised a $24M Series A in Oct 2026.
- Cephia: Princeton spinout in multimodal computational imaging. $4M seed in Oct 2025.
- Sensetics: programmable matter that digitizes the sense of touch, covered by Forbes in Nov 2025.
- RESOLV Technology: listed on the portfolio page; the page gives no description.
The site lists no exits. Conrad Burke's earlier company Innovalight was acquired by DuPont, and his board role at Capella Photonics ended in a sale to Alcatel-Lucent.
Team
- Conrad Burke, Managing Partner (Palo Alto / San Francisco): photonics expert and founder and CEO of Innovalight (acquired by DuPont). Former venture partner at Sevin Rosen Funds and Invention Science Fund. Board roles at Lumotive, LEADOPTIK and Cephia, and advisory roles at Cendana Capital. Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year and a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. MS in Physics from Trinity College, BS from University College Dublin.
- Chris Alliegro, Managing Partner (Seattle): former managing director of the Invention Science Fund and, before that, of the Invention Development Fund, which made early metamaterials investments. Previously a Microsoft executive (data center operations, MSN engineering) and Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Labs. PhD in Physics from Yale.
- Christina Teng, Lead Financial and Operations Advisor: finance executive at Qnovo, Innovalight and New Focus, with a CPA background from KPMG. BS from UC Berkeley.
Decision Process and Lead Tendency
The two managing partners founded and run the fund, so decisions most likely sit with the partnership. The site gives no timeline, warm-intro requirement or lead policy. Public sources show LEADOPTIK as a MetaVC-led seed and show MetaVC on later rounds alongside others such as Samsung, Playground Global and Gates Frontier.
Founder Preferences
The firm favors technical founders commercializing university or lab research in photonics, optics and advanced materials, often spinouts (Duke, Princeton). Both partners are physicists and operators, so expect deep technical diligence and an interest in manufacturable, scalable hardware.
Geographic Focus
The firm is San Francisco-based, with a partner in Seattle. The portfolio is mostly in Silicon Valley, Seattle and the Princeton and Duke ecosystems, with Mangata operating in Scotland. The site gives no stated geographic limit.
