NANKAI NEXT Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
NANKAI NEXT Ventures is the corporate venture capital (CVC) arm of Nankai Electric Railway (南海電気鉄道), the major Osaka–Wakayama rail, real estate, and retail conglomerate that operates the Nankai Line, Airport Line, and large commercial developments like Namba Parks and Namba City. The CVC was established January 6, 2025 and began active deployment in mid-2025. Its stated mission is to realize a society "overflowing with nankai ii ne" (things that are genuinely good), and its explicit strategy is to search for new, medium-to-long-term revenue streams outside Nankai Group's existing core businesses (rail, real estate, retail) by backing startups with innovative technology or business models and high growth/profitability potential. The firm positions itself less as a purely financial investor and more as a long-term operating partner, explicitly committing in every deal announcement to "accompany" (伴走する) the portfolio company's growth — consistent with a strategic/corporate rather than purely financial CVC mandate.
Stage Focus
Public materials describe the mandate as spanning "all stages with an emphasis on early-stage" domestic Japanese startups. In practice, the confirmed portfolio to date sits at seed through Series A: several unstaged early rounds in mid-2025, a Series A participation (Mofuku Rescue, ~¥500M round), and a seed-extension participation alongside larger financial VCs (FLASH, cumulative ~¥1.3B seed).
Check Size
No individual check sizes have been publicly disclosed for any of the nine confirmed investments. The total fund/operating scale is approximately ¥2 billion (roughly $13M at current exchange rates), with an investment execution period targeted through March 2028. Given the fund size and the pace of ~9 investments in ~14 months, individual checks are likely a small fraction of the total pool, consistent with a CVC co-investing alongside other seed/Series A investors rather than writing large lead checks.
Lead Tendency
NANKAI NEXT Ventures appears to consistently co-invest rather than lead. In its most recent disclosed round (FLASH, announced August 5, 2026), it participated alongside Sony Innovation Fund, Global Brain, Sideways, and angel investor Nobuhiro Ariyasu. In Mofuku Rescue's Series A, the round was led by ALPHA and HIRAC FUND. No press release identifies NANKAI NEXT Ventures as lead investor to date.
Recent Activity
The CVC has been actively deploying since its June 2025 launch, with a steady cadence of new investments roughly every 1–2 months through 2026:
- June 2025: First three investments (Hanpo Saki, KaKa Creation, MOOV) announced simultaneously at fund launch
- October 2025: The Chain Museum
- March 2026: ATOMica
- May 2026: FUNDiT
- July 2026: bestat and Mofuku Rescue (喪服レスキュー)
- August 2026: FLASH (seed extension)
Portfolio Highlights
Nine confirmed portfolio companies span a deliberately broad set of sectors, reflecting the "beyond our core business" mandate:
- Hanpo Saki (hampo.co) — LivMap, a digital-mapping SaaS for infrastructure management, snow removal, forestry, logistics, and emergency response field operations
- KaKa Creation (kakacreation.co.jp) — AI-powered animation production and IP development
- MOOV (moov.co.jp) — delivery-type car-sharing mobility service
- The Chain Museum (t-c-m.art) — ArtSticker art-discovery platform, gallery operations, and spatial art coordination for hotels/commercial facilities
- ATOMica (atomica.co.jp) — social coworking spaces, the "Coyage" regional career program, and "KOMMONS," a customer-success BPO/community business, based in Miyazaki
- FUNDiT (fundit.jp) — shared-creation M&A roll-up strategy for mid-size IT/advertising businesses, 100+ deals completed since 2021
- bestat (bestat-data.com) — "3D.Core," a cloud service turning photos/video/point-cloud data into lightweight 3D models for manufacturing and infrastructure digital twins
- Mofuku Rescue / 喪服レスキュー (mofuku-rescue.co.jp) — 24-hour unattended rental of mourning attire, 22 locations nationwide, Series A ~¥500M
- FLASH (flashinc.jp) — "Million," Japan's top-ranked domestically-developed short-form drama app, expanding into AI video and IP/publishing
No exits have been publicly reported yet, consistent with the CVC's young age (est. January 2025).
Team
- Kunihiko Furuyama (古山邦彦), Representative Director and President — concurrently Director, Business Strategy Division / Management Strategy Office at parent Nankai Electric Railway. He is the sole named individual across all public NANKAI NEXT Ventures press releases and appears to be the face of the fund's investment decisions.
Beyond Furuyama, no other named investment professionals could be confirmed from public sources at the time of this research; the organization is registered at Nankai's WeWork Namba Skyio office in Osaka.
Decision Process
Not publicly disclosed. Given the small confirmed headcount and status as a wholly-owned Nankai Group subsidiary, decisions likely run through a compact internal team with sign-off tied back to Nankai Electric Railway's broader strategy function, but this is not confirmed.
Founder Preferences
No explicit founder-persona statement is published. Observed pattern across the portfolio favors domestic (Japan-based) founders building B2B/infrastructure-adjacent technology (mapping, 3D/spatial data, M&A tech) as well as consumer and community platforms (mobility, art, coworking, content) — a generalist mandate unified mainly by "not Nankai's existing core business" rather than a narrow vertical thesis.
Geographic Focus
Exclusively domestic Japan. All nine confirmed portfolio companies are Japanese entities (Tokyo, Miyazaki, and other locations), and public materials describe the mandate as investing in "国内スタートアップ" (domestic startups).
