Olympus Innovation Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Olympus Innovation Ventures (OIV) is the corporate venture capital arm of Olympus Corporation, the Japanese medical technology company best known as the global leader in flexible endoscopy. OIV was launched in October/November 2021 with an initial $50 million commitment, and in December 2025 Olympus tripled its commitment with a second fund, Olympus Innovation Ventures Fund II, targeting $150 million deployed over roughly ten years. The fund invests in "customer-driven solutions in medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health" that complement or extend Olympus's market-leading endoscopic solutions. The explicit strategic intent is to accelerate progress toward an "endosuite of the future," combining AI, robotics, next-generation imaging, and digital platforms with Olympus's core endoscopy franchise.
OIV is operated in partnership with Cerity Partners Ventures (formerly known as differently-branded outsourced CVC platforms), which co-manages the fund and provides a dedicated corporate venture team. Cerity Partners Ventures runs CVC programs for 15+ corporations with 50+ investment professionals, giving OIV institutional venture infrastructure without Olympus building an internal investment team from scratch.
Stage Focus
OIV describes itself as stage-agnostic, investing from seed through growth stage. In practice, reported deals span Series A2 through Series D, suggesting the fund is most active from early institutional rounds (Series A/B) through later growth rounds, with occasional true seed activity.
Check Size
Publicly stated range is $500,000 to $10 million per investment. Some third-party sources (Caplight, aggregator profiles) cite a wider historical range of $100,000 to $5 million with a "sweet spot" around $1.5 million for the first fund; the $10M ceiling appears associated with the larger Fund II. Treat $500K-$10M as the current official range.
Lead Tendency
OIV states it will "lead or join" funding rounds, i.e., both. No single-word public confirmation of lead-heavy behavior was found, so lead tendency is classified as "both."
Recent Activity
- December 15, 2025: Announced Olympus Innovation Ventures Fund II, a $150 million commitment (triple the original $50M Fund I), to be deployed over roughly 10 years into GI, urology, and respiratory MedTech startups.
- October/November 2021: Original OIV Fund I launched with $50 million commitment.
- Since inception, OIV has made nine investments total, spanning AI workflow/imaging solutions, medical imaging agents for cancer detection, neuromodulation implants, and diagnostic devices. Only six of the nine have been named in available public sources (see Portfolio Highlights); the remaining three are not publicly disclosed at this research pass.
- The fund targets three to five new investments per year globally.
Fund status: actively deploying, with a materially larger war chest following the December 2025 Fund II announcement.
Portfolio Highlights
Named portfolio companies (all in medical devices/diagnostics/digital health, aligned to Olympus's GI/urology/respiratory focus):
- Alimetry (alimetry.com) — Body Surface Gastric Mapping wearable and AI platform for diagnosing gastric dysfunction (New Zealand-founded, now available in NZ/Australia/UK/US).
- Eximis Surgical (eximissurgical.com) — Minimally invasive specimen segmentation and removal device for surgical tissue extraction through small incisions.
- Neuspera Medical (neuspera.com) — Ultra-miniaturized, implantable sacral neuromodulation device for treating overactive bladder/urinary incontinence.
- On Target Laboratories (ontargetlabs.com) — Intraoperative molecular imaging agents that bind to cancerous tissue and fluoresce under near-infrared light to help surgeons visualize tumor margins.
- Universal Diagnostics / Universal DX (universaldx.com) — Blood-based biotech diagnostics company focused on early detection of colorectal cancer; has a US commercialization partnership with Quest Diagnostics.
- Virgo Surgical Video Solutions (virgosvs.com) — Cloud video capture, management, and AI analysis platform for endoscopic (GI) procedures, including clinical trial recruitment acceleration via its EndoML platform.
No public exits or IPOs from the OIV portfolio were identified in this research pass.
Team
OIV does not list a public team page with individual bios; leadership is drawn from Olympus corporate strategy staff plus the outsourced Cerity Partners Ventures team:
- Abigail Hunter-Syed — Head of OIV (Olympus). Quoted describing the challenges of a corporate venture fund building a track record and reputation as a new entrant.
- Gabriela Kaynor — Executive Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, Olympus; Chair of the OIV Investment Committee. Frames OIV investments as accelerating Olympus's "endosuite of the future" vision.
- Townsend Goddard — Senior Vice President, Business Development, Olympus. Speaks to OIV's approach of building a strong innovation pipeline.
- Bob White — Director, Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO, Olympus Corporation of the Americas. Public sponsor of the expanded fund commitment.
- Kindra Tatarsky — Partner, Cerity Partners Ventures. Co-manages OIV's day-to-day investment operations and sourcing on behalf of Olympus.
- David Horowitz — Cerity Partners Ventures (per LinkedIn), also associated with the OIV program.
Decision process appears to run through an Investment Committee chaired by Gabriela Kaynor (Olympus corporate side), with sourcing, diligence, and deal execution support provided by the Cerity Partners Ventures team (Tatarsky, Horowitz, and others).
Decision Process
Investment Committee model: deals are sourced and diligenced with support from Cerity Partners Ventures, then approved by an Olympus-side Investment Committee chaired by the Chief Strategy Officer. This is consistent with a typical corporate venture governance structure (strategic committee + outsourced venture operating partner).
Founder Preferences
OIV backs founders building differentiated clinical technology in gastroenterology, urology, respiratory, ENT, gynecology, general surgery, and minimally invasive surgery — i.e., deep clinical/technical founding teams building devices, diagnostics, or digital health tools that plug into or extend the endoscopy-enabled care pathway, rather than generalist digital health or consumer health startups.
Geographic Focus
Global. OIV explicitly frames itself as pursuing "global marketplace opportunities," and its named portfolio includes companies originally founded outside the US (e.g., Alimetry, founded in New Zealand). Corporate headquarters for the Olympus America entity managing the fund is in Westborough, Massachusetts.
Headquarters / AUM
Location: Westborough, MA (Olympus Corporation of the Americas). Combined committed capital across both funds is $200 million ($50M Fund I + $150M Fund II); this research uses the $150M Fund II figure as the more recent, larger, and currently-deploying vehicle for the aum field, since Fund I capital is largely already deployed.
