OpenOcean Research
Investment Thesis
OpenOcean is a pan-European early-stage venture firm that partners with technical founders reshaping knowledge work and the infrastructure needed to scale it. Its stated view is that data is the ultimate moat in AI. The firm's roots are in fundamental data software: its founding team includes key people behind MySQL AB (acquired by Sun Microsystems for $1bn in 2008) who then built MariaDB Corporation into a category leader that listed on the NYSE in 2022. That operator background shapes how the team invests: deep technical diligence, close work with founders on early architecture and go-to-market decisions, and a preference for companies whose proprietary or specialized data compounds into a durable advantage.
Thematic Focus
The site names four current themes, driven by two forces: the transformation of knowledge work, and the need for better ways to scale data and compute infrastructure.
- AI-enabled services: platforms that use AI automation to reshape the economics of traditional service businesses in large, fragmented markets, often through acquisition-led roll-ups (Arbio in short-term rental management is the example).
- Horizontal and vertical AI automation: workflow platforms for specific industries or universal business functions, ideally built on proprietary data and able to grow from point tools into end-to-end operating systems.
- Quantum and scalable AI computation: quantum technology, software layers and orchestration that break energy and efficiency bottlenecks in AI scaling (IQM, Ubitium).
- Agentic infrastructure and developer tooling: orchestration frameworks and essential primitives for building, securing and deploying agents (MindsDB, Embeddable, LatticeFlow).
The firm also invests opportunistically in AI-native startups with strong data moats in other sectors.
Stage Focus
Seed and Series A, with some pre-Series A. The firm typically leads or co-leads rounds with initial tickets up to EUR 5M.
Check Size
Initial tickets up to EUR 5M. Third-party profiles cite EUR 1M to EUR 5M+. Recent example: $4M into Ubitium's $14M seed (October 2026).
Lead Tendency
The firm describes its approach as leading or co-leading Seed and early Series A rounds. It led Embeddable's EUR 6M seed (December 2024). In the Ubitium seed it participated alongside lead Ibex Investors, so the pattern is lead-or-co-lead with some follow positions.
Recent Activity
- October 2026: invested $4M in Ubitium's $14M seed, led by Ibex Investors.
- July 2026: portfolio company IQM listed on Nasdaq New York and Nasdaq Helsinki, the first European quantum company on a major US exchange.
- 2025: Series A in Arbio; launched a new fund with a EUR 130M target for European software companies (LinkedIn announcement).
- December 2024: led Embeddable's EUR 6M seed.
- 2024: Authologic Series A.
Fund status reads as actively deploying.

Decision Process
Partnership-led, with partners assigned as leads per company (the portfolio page filters by partner lead). Details of the committee process are not published.
Founder Preferences
Technical, relentless, AI-native founders with a real data moat, who are solving real problems. The firm describes itself as operator-led and founder-first, transparent and data-driven, and favors analytical teams with STEM backgrounds.
Geographic Focus
European-founded companies. The portfolio spans Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, Poland, Estonia, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, Lithuania, Norway and the UK, with some US presence. Offices are in Helsinki, London and Luxembourg.
Gaps
Total AUM is not published and third-party figures conflict (EUR 150M to EUR 250M across three funds), so AUM is left blank. Per-company investment stages are not carried because the page read did not give clean per-company evidence.
