Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE) is not a conventional venture capital fund; it is an independent investment company and venture builder operating in exclusive strategic partnership with the University of Oxford. Founded in 2015, OSE exists to transform Oxford's world-leading science into world-changing, billion-pound companies that solve global challenges while delivering strong returns for investors. Its stated edge is unrivalled access to Oxford's scientific IP, a 60-plus person team embedded permanently in Oxford's innovation ecosystem, and a proven venture-building engine that systematically creates 8-10 new ventures a year (with a target to double that by 2030), rather than passively screening inbound deal flow.
Sector Focus
OSE organizes around three sector teams:
- Deep Tech - quantum computing, AI, fusion energy, robotics, advanced materials, space and defence technology
- Life Sciences - drug discovery, novel therapeutics, biotech platforms
- HealthTech - diagnostics, medical devices, digital health tools
The firm also stays close to adjacent Oxford-connected innovation hubs at Harwell and Culham, and works with independent science startups beyond direct university spinouts.
Stage Focus
OSE invests across the full company lifecycle: from originating spinouts at pre-seed/seed (often as the first institutional investor via its Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Scientist-in-Residence programs) through to growth-stage follow-ons managed by a dedicated Independent Investments team once ventures mature past the initial "build" phase.

Lead Tendency
OSE typically originates and leads the earliest institutional round for its own spinouts, then increasingly co-invests alongside its 300+ network of specialist global co-investors as companies scale - a blended "leads early, co-invests later" posture.
Recent Activity
OSE remains highly active: it appointed a new CFO (Antonia Jenkinson, April 2026) and made new board appointments (March 2026); Stateful Robotics raised a $4.8M pre-seed (March 2026) and Densix raised a $4M seed (March 2026); Dark Blue Therapeutics was acquired in a deal worth up to $840M (January 2026); and portfolio company Oxford Ionics agreed to be acquired by IonQ for $1.075 billion (June 2025), the UK's first $1bn+ deep-science spinout exit. OSE itself raised $232M from banks (April 2025) and received a £15M investment from Aviva (March 2025) to fund continued deployment.

Notable exits beyond Oxford Ionics and Dark Blue Therapeutics include MiroBio (acquired by Gilead Sciences, ~$405M), DJS Antibodies (acquired by AbbVie), Base Genomics (acquired by Exact Sciences, $410M), and Oxford Semantic Technologies (acquired by Samsung Electronics). Decision Process
Sector-led partnership model: dedicated Deep Tech, Life Sciences and HealthTech investment teams (each headed by a Senior Partner or Partner) originate and support ventures, with a separate Independent Investments team taking over board-level involvement and follow-on capital decisions as companies scale past the initial build phase.
Founder Preferences
OSE is built to work with academic researchers and scientists first, not primarily with pre-formed founding teams. It recruits seasoned operators as salaried Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (18-month residencies) to co-found ventures alongside Oxford scientists, and embeds Scientists-in-Residence to translate lab research into venture-ready technology. It looks for meaningful global problems, breakthrough/defensible science, large scalable markets, credible paths to market, and durable IP-backed advantages.
