PhotonVentures Research
Investment Thesis
PhotonVentures is a European specialist venture capital firm focused exclusively on photonics, the technology that uses light instead of electrons to generate, transmit, process and sense information. The firm argues that as Moore's Law reaches its physical limits, AI clusters are hitting power ceilings, memory bandwidth cannot keep pace with compute, and electrical interconnects are approaching fundamental limits. Wafer-scale-manufacturable photonics extends the frontier with terabit optical networks, quantum-level sensitivity and chip-scale solid-state sensing. The firm calls this a trillion-dollar infrastructure transition now entering its deployment phase. Target sectors named on the site are AI & Computing, Data & Communications, Security & Resilience, Autonomy & Robotics, Healthcare & Biosensing, AR & VR, and Quantum Technologies.
Origin and Ecosystem Position
The firm was established in 2023 as an independent VC firm and grew out of the venture investment activities inside PhotonDelta, the Dutch integrated photonics ecosystem organisation. Its founders, who were PhotonDelta's leadership, are now full-time General Partners. PhotonDelta secured EUR 240M in initial funding and helped catalyse more than EUR 1.1B of follow-on public investment. PhotonVentures positions itself at the centre of the European photonics ecosystem (supply chain, industrial buyers, research institutions, co-investors), which it says gives it early technology signals and proprietary deal flow. It describes itself as an ecosystem investor and is an SFDR Article 8 fund.
Stage Focus
Seed to Series A, investing from early development through scaling. Third-party listings also mention pre-seed. Initial tickets are EUR 1M to 2.5M. The fund aims to back about 20 deep-tech frontrunners.
Check Size
Participation of EUR 1M to 2.5M per the April 2024 fund close release. EU-Startups lists a typical investment of EUR 1.5M to 3M.
Fund Status and Recent Activity
- August 2023: launched with a EUR 60M first round led by PhotonDelta and private investors.
- April 2024: second round of over EUR 15M closed, bringing the fund to the targeted EUR 75M, with BOM, Oost NL, TNO and University of Twente joining.
- October 2024: Invest-NL invested in PhotonVentures Fund I, which has a stated target of EUR 100M.
- 2025 to 2026 investments include Astrape Networks, Lumai, NcodiN, QuiX Quantum (follow-on), Arycs Technologies, CUbIQ Technologies and Golbriak Space. The fund is actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
Twenty companies are listed. They span data and telecom (EFFECT Photonics, Arycs, Astrape, CUbIQ, Lumai, NcodiN), foundries and supply chain (SMART Photonics, LioniX International, PHIX, MicroAlign), AR/VR display (Brilliance, VitreaLab), quantum compute (QuiX Quantum), sensing and mobility (PhotonFirst, Scantinel Photonics, MantiSpectra), healthcare and biosensing (Delta Life Science, Surfix, EFI) and space optical communications (Golbriak Space). Scantinel is marked inactive on the site.

Decision Process and Founder Preferences
A partnership of four General Partners. In a June 2026 Q&A, Ewit Roos said technology alone is not investable: they want a prototype, early customer engagement or a pilot, a clear application with customer pull, and a credible path to manufacturing and system integration. They favour technically deep founders with commercial ambition, clarity in explaining the product, and resilience. Red flags are lack of market focus, ignoring manufacturability, and unrealistic timelines and capital needs. Embedding in the photonics supply chain (foundries, packaging, integrators) is considered fundamental.
Geographic Focus
Europe, centred on the Netherlands (Eindhoven, Twente), with investments in France (NcodiN), UK (Lumai), Austria (VitreaLab), Estonia (Golbriak) and the US/Dutch spin-out Arycs.
Lead Tendency
Not stated explicitly. Portfolio press releases show it both leading and co-investing (for example with Oost NL in Brilliance), so lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
