Progressive Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Progressive Ventures is a Palo Alto seed-stage venture firm founded in 2024 by Mala Ramakrishnan. It backs B2B and enterprise AI founders, with the stated view that the next generation of enterprise companies will be built around enterprise workflows, proprietary data and AI-native products. The firm calls itself deeply technical and sector agnostic, and expects founders to bring the sector focus. A secondary stated mission is to back underrepresented founders, especially women, although Mala says the supply of women founders at top accelerators is the binding constraint.
Stage Focus
Seed. The firm looks for early traction: $500K to $1M of recognized ARR in the first year. It prefers founders with a track record of successful exits, domain expertise, and the ability to raise $3M+ in seed. Deals are sourced primarily from Y Combinator, StartX and Berkeley SkyDeck, and the firm invests alongside Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Kleiner Perkins, Accel, GV, Pear VC and Y Combinator.
Check Size
Not stated publicly. Third-party data shows Progressive as a participant (not lead) in the May 2026 $2.5M Crimson seed, which was led by Y Combinator. Check size is left unset rather than guessed.
Lead Tendency
The one dated deal we could verify (Crimson, May 2026) shows a participant role, and the firm describes investing alongside top-tier co-investors. Lead tendency is recorded as unknown, with a lean toward following.
Recent Activity
Fund I closed at about $12.24M from 94 LPs in August 2026 (the target was $3M at incorporation). The firm says it has backed 43 companies since 2024, nine-plus sectors, and that 11% of them generate $10M+ ARR. The most recent verified investment is Crimson (AI case intelligence for litigation teams), a $2.5M seed announced in May 2026. Mala has said she plans to raise another, larger fund, and the firm has stopped taking Fund I commitments.

Team
- Mala Ramakrishnan, Founder and Managing Partner. Three-time founder (Aeroprise, acquired by BMC; Cuvo, deployed at AT&T; Mavantis, an RPA company built inside SRI's venture arm). Former WhatsApp privacy head at Meta, with product roles at Cloudera, Oracle and Veeva. Stanford MS CS, Berkeley MS in data science and machine learning, StartX founder. Early investor in Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Perplexity. Also runs Founders Creative, a nonprofit community of 40,000+ founders, investors and executives, and hosts a podcast and Substack.
Decision Process
The firm appears to be effectively a solo-GP operation led by Mala, with operator-led technical diligence and a broad advisor and community network. Treat as a solo GP until a partnership is evidenced.
Founder Preferences
Technical founders with prior exits, domain expertise, early revenue and the ability to raise a $3M+ seed. The firm also states an intent to back more women founders, citing that women-founded startups generate $0.78 of revenue per $1 of funding versus $0.31 for all-male teams.
Geographic Focus
Silicon Valley and the Bay Area ecosystem (YC, StartX, SkyDeck alumni), though portfolio companies include teams with operations in Asia and Europe.
Gaps
No published check size, no per-company stage or date, no separate partners beyond Mala, and no warm-intro policy. The portfolio list was read from the site's own page data because the portfolio page is a client-rendered app whose images carried no company captions.
