Seed Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Seed Capital is Copenhagen-based and has operated since 2004 as Denmark's largest seed-stage venture capital fund. The firm's central question for any investment is "is this the next category winner?" and it gravitates toward companies riding underlying macro trends around transparency and user-generated content. Seed Capital is explicit that it is Denmark's largest fintech investor, though its 39-plus company portfolio also spans SaaS/enterprise software, consumer, deep tech, lifescience, and cleantech. The firm positions itself as far more than a check-writer, offering hands-on help with strategy, fundraising, legal matters, board construction, and the transition from founder-led team to a Series A-ready management team.
Stage Focus
Seed Capital invests at seed and late-seed, typically 12-18 months ahead of a Series A or early A-round, and Fund V extends this remit to "seed and early Series A stages." The firm aims to be the first institutional investor and typically leads or co-leads the round.
Check Size
Initial investment is €2-4M, with round sizes typically totaling €2-10M. The firm reserves substantial follow-on capital (roughly half the fund) to support portfolio companies into Series A and beyond.
Lead Tendency
Seed Capital leads. Its own positioning states it "aims to lead the seed stage funding round – often as the first institutional investor," and recent deals (Moxso, Fortiv, Oplane) were each publicly reported as led by Seed Capital.
Recent Activity
Seed Capital announced the first closing of its fifth flagship fund, Seed Capital V, at DKK 500M on 1 May 2025, expanding its remit across the broader Nordic region alongside a generational leadership transition. Since then the firm has continued deploying actively: a DKK 22M seed round in AI market-intelligence platform Tembi (December 2024), a $5.5M seed round in cybersecurity/phishing-simulation startup Moxso (August 2025, its first cybersecurity bet), a €3M seed round in AI-native business continuity platform Fortiv (announced December 2025), and a $5.2M seed round in Oplane, an AI-native threat-modeling platform (June 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
Since 2004 Seed Capital has made roughly 60 core investments, 10 exits, and 5 IPOs, with portfolio companies having raised more than $2.6BN in aggregate. Decision Process
Seed Capital operates as a partnership of general partners and partners rather than a solo-GP structure, consistent with its multi-decade, multi-fund history (Fund I in 2004 through Fund V in 2025) and deliberate discipline of only adding 3-5 new companies per year.
Founder Preferences
The firm looks for "die hard executors with a bold and ambitious vision" and strong founding-team chemistry, early customer love (e.g., it typically wants to see a SaaS business at 50K EUR MRR before investing), scalable businesses that can reshape a category within 8-10 years, timing tied to macro trends, and founders with deep, first-hand insight into the problem they are solving. It explicitly avoids business-to-government sales models, low-priority problems, overly time-bound problems, and homogenous founding teams, though it has backed solo founders.
Geographic Focus
Historically Denmark-only ("Denmark-based technology company with extraordinary founders"), with Fund V explicitly broadening the mandate across the wider Nordic region while remaining headquartered in Copenhagen.
