Shopify Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Shopify Ventures is the corporate venture arm of Shopify, headed by Tian Tian Feng. Its stated mission is to back bold founders who use cutting-edge technology to turn big ideas into breakthroughs, and to support companies that build for merchants, developers and entrepreneurs, including beyond commerce. The firm describes its north star as investing in "visionaries that will shape the future of entrepreneurship for the next 100 years", with the tagline "From hello world to IPO".
Sector Focus
The portfolio page groups companies into three themes:
- Next-Gen Commerce: companies that help merchants reach customers of all types and sizes worldwide, such as Faire, Flexport, Klaviyo, Gorgias, Global-e, Triple Whale, Tapcart, Whop and Yotpo.
- Infrastructure and Developer Tooling: AI, crypto and developer infrastructure, such as Exa, fal, Graphite, Liquid AI, Sanity, Thirdweb, Reown and Applied Compute.
- Entrepreneurship Enablement: fintech and tools for founders and operators, such as Stripe, Affirm, Melio, Codat, Pipe, Bench, Gumloop and Lightdash.
AI infrastructure and agent tooling features heavily in recent announcements (Gumloop, fal, Liquid AI, Graphite).
Stage Focus
The firm says it starts with founders at Seed and continues through Series B, and supports them across later stages. Its portfolio also contains late-stage and public names (Affirm, Klaviyo and Global-e are marked IPO), so it follows on and invests in some larger rounds.

One logo (TetraTrust) is shown on the page but its source file name notes it is not posted on the website as a Shopify investment, so it was left out. Decision Process
Not published. A small investor team reports to the Head of Shopify Ventures, so a partnership-style process is the working assumption, held at low confidence.
Founder Preferences
The site says it looks for exceptional founders with technical DNA, a clear vision and relentless drive to solve complex problems, and for companies whose technology advances commerce, developer experience and entrepreneurship. It offers board involvement, an Advisory Program of one-on-one and group sessions with Shopify specialists, and Founder Connections such as a Founder Summit, local meetups and domain dinners. Founders cite access to Shopify leadership and doors opened inside the Shopify organization.
