Solid Bond Research
Investment Thesis
Solid Bond is a Manchester-based UK pre-seed venture capital firm founded by operators Steve Caunce and Shaz Sulaman. The firm's core thesis is that the most valuable support a first-time investor can provide is not just capital, but genuine hands-on operational expertise — "support that's as valuable as the capital."
The founders bring 20+ years of experience scaling high-growth UK businesses together, most notably at Phones4U (part of John Caudwell's Caudwell Group), where they grew the chain from 70 loss-making stores to over 400 stores with £1 billion+ in turnover and £100M+ in profit. Steve Caunce subsequently served as CEO of AO.com, which floated on the London Stock Exchange at a $1.5 billion valuation. This operator pedigree is central to Solid Bond's differentiation: they are investors who have built and scaled real companies, not career financiers.
Stage Focus
Solid Bond invests exclusively at the pre-seed and early seed stage — typically before a startup has a fully defined product or revenue model. They describe themselves as investing "before you have the product or the revenue model figured out." The firm is comfortable being the first institutional money into a company and often serves as lead or sole institutional investor in early rounds.
Check Size
Typical investment range: £150,000–£500,000 per investment, with a broader possible range of £50,000–£1,000,000. At this ticket size, Solid Bond is positioned firmly at the earliest end of the UK VC market. The firm does not publicly disclose AUM.
Sector Focus
Solid Bond is sector-agnostic in practice but has a stated preference for B2B SaaS and tech-enabled businesses. Their portfolio spans enterprise software, retail technology, consumer apps, health/fitness tech, and digital marketplaces. They explicitly exclude life sciences, engineering, deep tech, gambling, and alcohol. The common thread across their portfolio is software-enabled businesses with clear go-to-market paths rather than frontier technology.
Geographic Focus
Primarily UK-based startups, with a preference for North West England founders. Solid Bond says it "likes to support local founders" from its Manchester base, though they invest UK-wide.
Lead Tendency
Solid Bond consistently leads or co-leads pre-seed rounds, given the small check sizes and the early stage at which they invest. They led the Saledock pre-seed round and co-led the Unfolded £1.2M pre-seed alongside FJ Labs.
Investment Process
Typically 6–10 weeks from initial meeting to capital deployment, structured in three phases: (1) initial meeting and assessment, (2) conviction-building including pre-investment model development with the team, and (3) formal pitching. The firm uses equity instruments including convertible loans and ASAs (Advance Subscription Agreements). Warm introductions are welcomed but not required — the firm accepts direct applications via their website.

Recent Activity
As of October 2024, Solid Bond has made 4 tracked investments, with 2 in 2024. The firm has 2 portfolio exits (Saledock, Clicksit). The most recent tracked activity is the Saledock acquisition in early 2024. Tracxn noted no investments in 2025 as of their data cut-off, but the firm's website remains active.
Founder Preferences
Solid Bond explicitly evaluates "founder fit" as the primary investment criterion — the ability to work alongside the founding team operationally is more important than the sector. They prefer founders who are open to mentorship and operator involvement from day one, and who can benefit from practical guidance on sales strategy, financial forecasting, business development, and go-to-market.
Decision Process
Small partnership of operator-investors. Likely a streamlined decision process given the small team size. Investment committee of 2-3 partners. Typical timeline: 6-10 weeks.
