Steel Atlas Research
Investment Thesis
Steel Atlas invests in what it calls hyper-techno industrialization: the period in which political pressure for reshoring converges with AI, robotics and new energy systems, and the cost of manufactured goods converges toward the cost of the energy used to make them. The firm says it makes concentrated bets on the future monopolies of this wave. Its research-led approach picks sectors by measuring vulnerability to industrial volatility (critical minerals, supply chains, energy, communications), then looks for companies that build resilience in those areas. Memos on the site include The Triad (its general framework), The Resilience Matrix, Data Gushers (untapped sensed data streams), Embedded Advantage (services as the AI on-ramp in industrials), waste valorization, critical mineral volatility, and the new nuclear future.
Differentiator
The firm says it is supported by a global network of industrial conglomerates and their owners. It claims this network provides high-signal information, which it calls public secrets, and commercialization pathways for portfolio companies. The WSJ (August 2024) reported a Saudi-U.S. angle, with Apeiron among the backers of the first fund. The partners have also written about aligning investments with public-private industrial capital deployments in the Middle East.
Stage Focus
The firm describes itself as early-stage, investing in industrial technology companies in the US and Europe. It does not publish exact stage rules. Its largest disclosed round is a $23.2M round in Transmutex in 2023, co-led with Albert Wenger of Union Square Ventures, so it can lead or co-lead rounds above a typical seed size.
Check Size
Not published. The Transmutex round was $23.2M in total, with Steel Atlas co-leading. Fund sizes are small relative to the round sizes, so individual checks are likely modest. Treat check size as unknown.
Lead Tendency
Steel Atlas co-led Transmutex with Union Square Ventures and describes working closely with companies after investing. It appears to co-lead and to syndicate with top-tier funds, so lead tendency is recorded as both.
Recent Activity
Fund I invested in ten or more companies. In October 2025 PEI reported Steel Atlas targeting $50M for a second fund. In November 2026 VCWire reported, citing an SEC filing, that Steel Atlas Select Fund I has raised $16.1M from 16 investors toward a target of up to $100M. The portfolio page now lists 14 companies, including recent additions such as Primitive Instruments and Azora.

Decision Process
A two-GP partnership. The firm says its depth of analysis limits it to ten or fewer companies per fund (an older LinkedIn description said twelve).
Founder Preferences
Founders building industrial and energy hardware or software, often at the edge of national-interest bottlenecks, who can use the conglomerate network for commercialization. The firm favors technical depth and companies that can become category monopolies.
Geographic Focus
US and Europe, with a New York base and strong ties to the Gulf region.
Gaps
No published check size, stage rules, or AUM. Fund I size was not confirmed from a primary source. Portfolio company stages and investment dates are not disclosed on the site, so none are stored.
