The Pitch Fund Research
Overview
The Pitch Fund is the venture fund powered by The Pitch, one of the most popular startup podcasts in the world. Founded and managed by Josh Muccio (Managing Partner) and Lisa Muccio (Co-GP), the fund co-invests in early-stage startups that pitch on The Pitch podcast alongside the professional VCs featured on the show. The fund is a 506(c) vehicle, meaning it can be publicly marketed to accredited investors — a deliberate choice that lets the Muccios fundraise through the podcast itself.
Investment Thesis
The Pitch Fund operates as an opportunistic, generalist fund that invests at the pre-seed and seed stage. Its core insight is structural: The Pitch podcast has built-in deal flow that most VCs spend their entire careers chasing. Founders apply to pitch on the show, get vetted through the recording process, and are evaluated live by top-tier VCs including Charles Hudson (Precursor Ventures), Elizabeth Yin (Hustle Fund), Cyan Banister, Jesse Middleton (Flybridge), Phil Nadel, and Jillian Manus (Structure Capital). The Pitch Fund then co-invests in the deals that emerge from those sessions.
The fund does not lead rounds. It follows the VCs who do diligence live on the podcast. The investment thesis is generalist by design — the fund invests across sectors because the podcast covers all kinds of founders with compelling stories. The unifying filter is founder quality and narrative: the Muccios look for talented founders with a story to tell.
Fund History & Structure
The fund was launched publicly in November 2022 alongside Episode #101, "Josh Pitches The Pitch," in which Josh and Lisa literally pitched their own media company to the VCs on their show while simultaneously launching the fund to listeners. The fund is structured as The Pitch Fund LLC and raised under Reg D 506(c), which allows public advertising.
- Fund I: Deployed approximately $6.3M across 44 startups featured across Seasons 9–15 of the podcast (launched 2022, now fully deployed)
- Fund II: Currently open and targeting $20M; actively deploying
- Total raised on the show (all time): $26.3M across 74 startups, including $4.0M from The Pitch Fund, $15.0M from VCs, and $7.3M invested by listeners directly
- LP base: 176+ unique LPs, primarily podcast listeners and accredited investors who follow the show
Check Size & Stage Focus
The fund invests at pre-seed and seed. Check sizes are relatively modest by institutional VC standards, typically in the $50K–$143K range per deal (average approximately $143.7K per AngelList data). In individual deals documented from Season 12, checks ranged from $50K to $100K into specific companies alongside larger VC commitments. The fund reserves allocation to follow on in syndicate deals when extra allocation is available.
The public syndicate was shut down in July 2024 — most deals no longer have extra allocation available to non-LPs. As of mid-2024, syndicate access is limited exclusively to fund LPs.
Lead Tendency
The Pitch Fund does not lead rounds. It is a co-investor, always following the VCs who pitch live on the show. In every documented deal, a larger VC (Charles Hudson, Elizabeth Yin, Cyan Banister, Jesse Middleton, etc.) leads or co-leads the round, with The Pitch Fund participating with a smaller check.
Geographic Focus
The fund is generalist geographically. Founders pitch from across the United States and internationally. The Pitch has hosted live taping events in Miami and Tampa, Florida. The Muccios are based in Sarasota, Florida. The fund does not restrict investments by geography.
Sector Focus
As a generalist fund, The Pitch Fund invests across a wide range of sectors. Portfolio sectors include healthtech/digital health, fintech, B2B enterprise software, edtech, consumer apps, food & beverage/CPG, AI/ML tools, and hardware/wearables. The fund's sector mix is entirely driven by which founders pitch on the show rather than a deliberate portfolio construction thesis.
Team
Josh Muccio – Managing Partner. Founder-turned-podcaster-turned-VC. Founded iHeart Repair (an electronics repair company) in 2010, built it for four years, and sold it. Later launched The Pitch as an independent podcast, sold it to Gimlet Media, watched Spotify acquire Gimlet, then repurchased The Pitch independently in 2022 with Lisa. He hosts and produces the show, manages the fund, and makes investment decisions on deals that come through the podcast.
Lisa Muccio – Co-Owner & Co-GP. Co-purchased The Pitch from Spotify in 2022 alongside Josh. She manages the business operations side of both the media company and the fund. She is Co-General Partner of The Pitch Fund.

Decision Process
The fund's decision process is tied to the podcast recording cycle. Founders first pitch on the show in front of VCs. After recording, the Muccios evaluate the pitch, conduct follow-up diligence calls, and decide whether The Pitch Fund will co-invest alongside the VCs who committed in the room. Investment decisions are made jointly by Josh and Lisa Muccio.
Dealflow Advantage
The fund's structural edge is its dealflow: over 30 million downloads and 600,000+ newsletter subscribers create a constant inbound pipeline of founders who want to pitch on the show. This compounding dealflow moat differentiates The Pitch Fund from traditional institutional vehicles.
