Thomvest Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Thomvest is a group of investment companies that invest on behalf of Peter J. Thomson and his family (the Thomson Reuters family). The firm describes itself as "long-term partners in company building" and has backed founders since 1996. The venture arm, Thomvest Ventures, is vertically organized: each partner leans on a network and domain expertise in a core market to support portfolio companies and find leaders in those markets. The core verticals are fintech, AI and data infrastructure, and cybersecurity, with a long tail in proptech and mortgage technology, enterprise software, and a few hardware and energy bets.
Stage Focus
Public profiles describe Thomvest Ventures as an early-stage to growth investor covering Seed, Series A and Series B, and it has joined later rounds in breakout companies (it announced participation in Lumilens's Series C in 2026, a round reported to value the company at $5.5B). The firm's stage focus is taken from third-party profiles; the website does not state stages.
Check Size
The website does not state check sizes. A January 2024 report on the $250M fund announcement said checks would be $5M to $15M for early-stage and $7M to $25M for later-stage deals. Third-party profiles show wider ranges (roughly $500K to $30M) and a 7 to 10% ownership target. Confidence is moderate.
Lead Tendency
The firm can lead and co-lead. It led the C$20M round in DistillerSR parent Evidence Partners in 2022, and says it works closely with founders after investing. Lead tendency is set to both.
Recent Activity
The firm reports 92 total investments, 50 exited companies and $702M of AUM on its homepage (a separate January 2024 announcement cited $750M total AUM after a new $250M fund, so the figure has moved). Recent activity includes participation in the Lumilens Series C (August 2026), the Cohere sovereign-AI market insight (October 2026), and the Opaque transaction with Anthropic (October 2026). Fund status is treated as actively deploying: the firm is publishing weekly insights, running fintech events and adding portfolio names such as Lumilens, Exaforce, StackGen, Relyance AI and Keyway.

The team site says it works closely together across its San Francisco and Toronto offices on investment evaluation. Capital is the Thomson family's, so decisions run through a partnership with the Chairman setting direction. Exact timeline and warm-intro requirements are not stated.

Mission-driven founders building category-defining companies in large, growing markets; the firm stresses long-term partnership and operating support (operating partners with CEO and board experience in security and enterprise).

San Francisco (venture) and Toronto (asset management and the Canadian portfolio). The portfolio includes Canadian companies (Cohere, Neo, Pine, Ecobee, DistillerSR, Public Mobile), US companies, and international fintech (Covalto in Mexico, Tala in emerging markets).
