TPG Life Sciences Innovations Research

Investment Thesis

TPG Life Sciences Innovations (LSI) is the life sciences strategy inside TPG's Growth platform. TPG describes it as a way to partner with companies developing disruptive science, technologies and business models that improve outcomes for patients with significant unmet medical need. The team invests thematically in oncology, autoimmune and inflammatory disease, cardiometabolic disease, ophthalmology and rare disease, plus commercial-stage medical devices and tech-enabled services. The firm calls its approach inflection capital: money that carries a company to clinical proof of concept, which it sees as the key value inflection. Partner Lucian Iancovici has said the thesis is different from incubating startups. The team would rather wait for companies to prove themselves than fund the many early ideas backed by top investors in Boston, San Francisco and San Diego.

Stage Focus

LSI focuses on preclinical and clinical-stage therapeutics companies, with an emphasis on getting them through proof of concept. Observed rounds include Series A (Sling Therapeutics, 2022), Series B (Adcendo, 2024), Series C (Sling Therapeutics, Series C round led by Forbion) and Series D (Odyssey Therapeutics, 2025). It also joined a large private placement in a public company (Achieve Life Sciences, 2026). TPG also says it can structure deals for companies at varying maturities and capital needs, and it has helped launch companies, such as Sionna Therapeutics with RA Capital.

Check Size

No check size is published for LSI. The fund is $580M and plans 15 to 20 investments, which implies an average commitment in the tens of millions of dollars including reserves. That is an inference, not a stated range, so check size fields are left empty.

Lead Tendency

Both. TPG LSI led or co-led some rounds (it is named as a lead alongside NEA and Norwest for TPG Biologics, and Achieve's placement was led by new investors including TPG LSI) and followed in others (it joined Forbion's lead in Sling's Series C, and participated as a new investor in Adcendo's Series B led by TCGX, and in Odyssey's Series D).

Recent Activity

LSI closed its inaugural $580M fund in August 2024. The strategy launched in September 2022 and includes a portion of commitments from The Rise Fund. The team had about $750M invested in life sciences in the years before the close. Since the close, LSI has joined Adcendo's $135M Series B (November 2024), Odyssey Therapeutics' $213M Series D (September 2025), Ouro Medicines (July 2025, per PitchBook), the Achieve Life Sciences private placement of up to $354M (April 2026) and Sling Therapeutics' $123M Series C (2026). The fund appears to be actively deploying.

Portfolio Highlights

The TPG page lists Bicara Therapeutics, Ellodi Pharmaceuticals, K2 Medical Research, MBrace Therapeutics, Saluda Medical, Santa Ana Bio, Sling Therapeutics and Sudo Biosciences as select investments. Press coverage adds Adcendo, Odyssey Therapeutics, Ouro Medicines and Achieve Life Sciences. Sionna Therapeutics, a cystic fibrosis company TPG helped launch with RA Capital and spun out of Sanofi, went public in February 2025 in an upsized IPO of nearly $220M.

Team

  • Lucian Iancovici, Partner and Managing Director. Based in San Diego. Joined TPG in 2018 after about five years at Qualcomm Ventures, where he managed the Qualcomm Life Fund and a joint venture with Novartis (dRx Capital). Early Fitbit investor.
  • Carolyn Ng, Partner and Managing Director. San Francisco Bay Area. PhD in oncology.
  • Shinichiro Fuse, Partner. Based in Boston.

Decision Process

A three-partner investment team inside TPG's Growth platform. The team draws on TPG's healthcare franchise, which has invested more than $30B in healthcare since 2003. Formal committee structure is not published, so it is modeled as a partnership inside a larger firm.

Founder Preferences

Scientific founders and teams with differentiated assets that are approaching clinical proof of concept. The partners say they favor disruptive science with real clinical impact over incubation-stage ideas, and they bring TPG's operating and business-building resources to support companies from creation through development to commercialization.

Geographic Focus

Global in outlook, with the team based in San Diego, San Francisco and Boston. Portfolio companies span the US, Europe (Adcendo in Denmark, Ellodi in the UK and US) and Australia (Saluda Medical). TPG itself has about $327B in AUM, 30 offices and 1,900 employees as of June 30, 2026. The $580M LSI fund is the relevant pool for this profile.
