Trilogy Equity Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Trilogy Equity Partners is a Greater Seattle-based early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2006 by former entrepreneurs and operators. The firm's roots trace back to its founding partners' operating careers building McCaw Cellular, Western Wireless, and VoiceStream Wireless (later T-Mobile), along with ADIC (sold to Quantum for $770M) and stints leading Microsoft's Developer Division. Trilogy's thesis is that the Pacific Northwest produces enduring, category-defining companies, and that experienced operators are uniquely valuable partners to the next generation of founders. The firm invests primarily its own capital (a closely held, evergreen fund structure), which it says frees it from fundraising distractions and lets it focus entirely on founders.
Sector Focus
Trilogy is sector-agnostic within technology but has concentrated historically in enterprise software and developer tools (Zuplo, Row Zero, TestSprite, Comet, Watchful), consumer and mobile security (Lookout, Blink), fintech/remittances (Remitly), healthcare and wellbeing (Alongside, ResponseLink), edtech (Educative, Skilljar, Maximal Learning, Wild Zebra), and vertical AI applications (8Flow, Canvas, Vieu). It has also backed a handful of hardware/materials plays (Carbitex, Owlet) and consumer/social products (Ripl, BrightCanary).
Stage Focus
Trilogy specializes in early-stage investing, primarily at Seed, with selective activity at Pre-Seed and Series A. It backs both pre-revenue and post-revenue companies, aiming to partner at the point where product, team, and early customer signal begin to align.
Check Size
The firm's sweet spot is leading rounds, with initial checks typically ranging from $2M to $6M. It reserves additional capital to participate in follow-on rounds as portfolio companies scale.
Lead Tendency
Trilogy leads the large majority of its investments; it describes itself as being at its best when it is the first institutional partner shaping a round.
Recent Activity
Trilogy raised a second fund of more than $150M in 2022 and remains actively deploying. Recent activity includes a lead on Wild Zebra's $6M seed round (August 2026, AI-powered Socratic learning), an investment in Noosphere (~August 2026), a $6.7M seed round led for TestSprite (October 2025, AI-driven software testing), and earlier 2025 investments in Row Zero (cloud-native spreadsheets) and Canvas (AI for the built world). Portfolio company Alongside was acquired by TimelyCare in May 2026, and Skilljar was acquired by Gainsight in April 2025.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable outcomes include Remitly's 2021 IPO (Trilogy led its 2012 Seed round), Owlet's 2021 public listing via SPAC, Lookout's enterprise pivot after selling its consumer business to F-Secure for $223M, and the ADIC-style operating legacy that predates the fund. Skilljar (acquired by Gainsight, 2025) and Alongside (acquired by TimelyCare, 2026) are recent exits. Active standouts include Boundless (immigration technology), Row Zero, Zuplo, TestSprite, Comet, and Opanga (telecom network optimization, backed alongside Cisco Investments and Boulder Ventures).

Decision Process
Trilogy is a small partnership that moves nimbly; investment decisions run through the partnership rather than a formal investment committee, with most diligence conducted through a series of conversations with founders over weeks to quarters.
Founder Preferences
Trilogy looks for founders with deep subject-matter expertise, conviction, clarity of thought, and a bias toward execution — prioritizing how founders think and adapt over polished decks. It favors problem-driven founders in large, expanding, or technology-shifted markets, with early signs of customer pull or engagement.
Geographic Focus
Trilogy is rooted in the Pacific Northwest and invests predominantly in companies headquartered in Seattle, Bellevue, and the broader Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia region, citing the area's concentration of technical talent and operator culture.
