Unapologetic Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Unapologetic Ventures (UV) is an early-stage fund that backs "category-defining founders who are unapologetic about the size of their ambition" across three lenses: Health, Wealth, and Work. The firm frames itself as a movement as much as a fund, built on three promises: capital to get founders started, community to open doors, and conviction to stay through the hard years. The stated belief is that talented founders should have the capital, freedom, ownership, agency, and support to build what the world needs next, and that doing good and generating returns are not mutually exclusive.
The site lists five themes: overlooked markets (women's health, FemTech, care infrastructure, underrepresented founders, cross-border ecosystems), a broad founder profile (ambitious founders who do not all come from the same zip code, university, or network), operator-first VC, mission-driven returns, and economic power for women.
Sector Focus
The three sector pillars are:
- Health: digital health, FemTech, care infrastructure. The shift from reactive treatment to proactive, personalized care.
- Wealth: FinTech, InsurTech, digital assets, the internet of value. The shift from financial gatekeeping to accessible, intelligent financial systems.
- Work: AI, quantum, computer vision, deep tech, the fractional economy and future of work.
The founder pitch form lists investment areas as Future of Work, FemTech, FinTech, InsurTech, DeepTech, and HealthTech.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed. The firm says it engages founders 12 to 36 months before institutional rounds. The pitch form also offers Bridge, SPV support, and Series A or later as stages, so it can take later or structured situations. The form asks how much the founder is raising, how much is soft-circled, and how much is committed and wired.
Check Size
Not published. Fund size, check size, and fund vintage are not on the site. Mellie Chow's personal profile on third-party sites lists pre-seed and seed. The site has a "Back the Fund" link for LPs, which suggests the fund is raising or recently raising.
Lead Tendency
Unknown. Mellie's personal portfolio page lists a group of "Lead Deals" (Fibra, Genetics Adviser, The Fitting Room, NLPatent, Mantle, Mirsee Robotics), which suggests she leads or co-leads angel rounds, but these are her personal angel investments, not confirmed fund investments.
Recent Activity
No fund announcements, closes, or investment press releases were found. Recent visible activity is ecosystem work: a judge seat at an Invest Detroit Ventures Startup World Cup regional event, a Carta-hosted funding trends podcast (Dec 2025), an Ugly Talk seed and pre-seed investors panel, FemTech USA (a community event series UV promotes), and a private women's leadership community called At The Helm.
Portfolio Highlights
UV's site has no portfolio page. Mellie Chow's personal site (melliechow.com/portfolio) shows her direct angel investments and exits, and carries a UV banner and links to the fund. These are listed in the payload as the best available portfolio signal, and they should be read as the founding GP's angel record rather than confirmed fund holdings.
- Angel investments: Anzu.io (in-game advertising, seed), Willful.co (digital wills, seed), Intuitive Machines (space tech, IPO 2023), Heaven's Door (spirits, Series A), Mod Garden (indoor farming, seed).

She is also an LP in Alumni Ventures, Techstars Boulder (2026 to 2030 vintage), and Hustle Fund IV. The Alumni Ventures exits on her page belong to that fund and are excluded.
