Unless Research
Investment Thesis
Unless is an investment firm on a mission to catalyze the "New Industrial Revolution" — backing companies transforming industrial systems across supply chains, manufacturing, energy, and transportation. Co-founded in 2021 by Trevor Zimmerman and David Mindell, the firm believes that industrial sectors (manufacturing, energy, mobility) represent the next frontier of transformative technology investment, accounting for more than 70% of all US greenhouse gas emissions and the majority of economic infrastructure.
The thesis is grounded in three macro tailwinds: (1) geopolitical shifts requiring domestic supply chain resilience, (2) urgent climate response driving demand for new energy and materials technologies, and (3) workforce dynamics reshaping manufacturing operations. Unless supports founders working at the intersection of deep tech and industrial scale — companies developing advanced materials, autonomous systems, ocean energy, purpose-built silicon, and intelligent manufacturing software.
A unique element of the Unless thesis is the "Collective of Experts" — an advisory network of AI researchers, additive manufacturing founders, supply chain and economic policy specialists, energy systems experts, and industrial robotics leaders who provide portfolio companies with domain knowledge, networks, and operational expertise unavailable at traditional VC firms.
Fund Structure
Unless employs a perpetual capital structure — explicitly designed to avoid the constraints of a traditional 10-year fund lifecycle. This allows the firm to:
- Hold positions indefinitely across industrially relevant timescales
- Deploy multiple capital types: equity, debt, and buyouts
- Continue investing as portfolio companies enter public markets
- Compound expertise and relationships across cycles
In October 2022, Unless raised $43.3M in its initial fund close (SEC filing). The firm has indicated an ambition to deploy $75–100M per year across its portfolio, suggesting an active fundraising and deployment program beyond the initial fund.
Stage and Check Size
Unless primarily enters at Series A, though it has demonstrated flexibility across stages. The firm has led multiple rounds with concentrated capital:
- Led Sustainment's $12M Series A (August 2022) — committed 90% of the capital
- Led Villa's $20M platform round (April 2025) plus a $20M PropCo joint venture
- Participated in Panthalassa's $53M Series A alongside Founders Fund, Lowercarbon Capital, and others
- Participated in Positron AI's oversubscribed $51.6M Series A (July 2025)
- Participated in Vecna Robotics' $100M Series C (June 2024, led by Tiger Global)
- Participated in Humatics' $30M Series B
Typical check sizes appear to range from $5M to $20M+ in lead positions, with co-investment capacity for larger rounds.
Lead Tendency
Unless has demonstrated both lead and co-investment behavior. For early-stage industrial tech companies where they have high conviction and domain expertise (e.g., Sustainment, Villa), they lead and often anchor rounds. For larger growth-stage companies or specific domain opportunities (Vecna, Positron, Panthalassa), they participate as strategic value-add investors.

Geographic Focus
US-focused, with headquarters in Boulder, CO. Portfolio companies span Boston, MA (Alloy, Humatics); Waltham, MA (Vecna Robotics); San Francisco, CA (Villa, Xwing); Reno, NV (Positron); Santa Barbara, CA (Briq); Portland, OR (Panthalassa).
Founder and Investment Preferences
Unless backs technical founders with deep domain expertise who are operating at the frontier of industrial transformation. Ideal portfolio companies are working on paradigm-shifting technologies — not incremental software improvements, but deep-tech solutions that address the physical world: energy systems, advanced materials, autonomous machines, and industrial-scale software platforms. The firm particularly values founders who have "skin in the game" with long track records in their domains.
Decision Process
Partnership model with domain expert validation through the Collective of Experts. Investment decisions appear to involve managing partners (Trevor Zimmerman leads the investment team) with input from domain experts for technical validation.
Fund Status
Actively deploying. Most recent investments include Aether (December 2025) and Villa (April 2025). Portfolio exits in 2024-2026 (Xwing, Enosemi, Alloy Enterprises) suggest strong performance and liquidity.
