Updata Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Updata Partners is a Washington, D.C.-based growth equity firm founded by former software operators. The firm partners with capital-efficient B2B software and AI-driven companies located outside the Bay Area, providing not just capital but hands-on operating support from a team that has itself built and scaled software businesses. Updata explicitly positions itself as "operators, not just investors" and emphasizes durable, capital-efficient growth over growth-at-all-costs. The firm typically aims to be the first institutional capital investor in a company, and makes both majority and minority investments.
Sector Focus
Updata organizes its portfolio around six categories on its own site: Cybersecurity, Data & Analytics, Healthcare, Horizontal (broad B2B/SaaS), Infrastructure, and Vertical (vertical SaaS). In practice the portfolio spans cybersecurity and identity/access management (Alert Logic, Liongard, Living Security, Portnox, Trustwave, FusionAuth), data/analytics and BI (Appfluent, HG Insights, Improvado, Logi Analytics), healthcare and digital health (MD Integrations, Vector Remote Care, Acclaris), marketing/adtech (Adthena, Collective Bias, PathFactory), HR/workforce tech (PerformYard, Jobs2Web, Benivo), fintech/insurance (LendKey, Vertical Insure), proptech (LandTech), and a growing concentration of AI-native and AI-infused software companies (Go.AI, Matilda Cloud, Nerdio, CData).
Stage Focus
Updata invests at the growth stage: companies with $5-50M in ARR growing 25-100%+ year over year, typically bootstrapped or lightly capitalized before Updata's investment. The firm does not do seed or early venture; it is a growth-equity investor writing larger checks into already-proven, capital-efficient businesses.
Check Size
Typical equity investment: $20M-$200M per company, spanning majority and minority positions. The firm's homepage explicitly states this range alongside its "$5-50M ARR" and "25-100%+ growth" targeting criteria.
Lead Tendency
Updata leads. Recent press releases describe the firm as having "led" the Series A in Go.AI and "led" the growth investment in MD Integrations, consistent with its stated preference to be the first institutional capital investor in a company.
Recent Activity
Updata closed Updata Partners VIII, L.P. in February 2026 with $875M in aggregate capital commitments — the largest fund in the firm's history, reached hard cap in six months. Combined with prior funds (including the still-deploying Updata Partners VII) and co-investments, the firm has raised more than $3.0 billion in total capital commitments. Since the VIII close, Updata has announced growth investments in Go.AI ($85M Series A, September 2026), Hi Rasmus ($50M, September 2026), Vertical Insure (August 2026), and TJM Labs (July 2026) from Fund VIII and Fund VII respectively, plus TitanX ($27M, January 2026) and MD Integrations ($77M, October 2025). The fund is actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
Updata's portfolio spans more than 25 years of growth-equity investing and includes numerous notable exits: Nintex (global workflow automation leader), Jama Software, Viewpoint (construction ERP, acquired by Trimble), Trustwave, DataCore Software, Ruby Receptionists (acquired by Great Hill Partners), Storyblocks, Mashable, Piano, and CData among many others. The current active portfolio of 83+ companies spans North America, Europe, and Australia/NZ, reflecting the firm's stated focus outside Silicon Valley.
Team
Updata is co-managed by two General Partners, Carter Griffin and Jon Seeber, both with the firm since the mid-2000s and 25+ years of software operating and investing experience. Griffin previously co-founded and ran Brivo Systems (a SaaS physical-security pioneer) through its sale to a strategic acquirer; Seeber previously led M&A and corporate development inside IBM Global Services. Braden Snyder, also a General Partner, joined from Sagent Advisors' investment banking practice. The broader team includes principals, vice presidents, associates, and a dedicated Value Creation team (led by Principal Ryan Brady) plus a roster of operating partners and operating advisors drawn from software company leadership.

Decision Process
Two co-managing General Partners (Griffin and Seeber) run the firm as a partnership, with a broader investment team of principals, VPs, and associates supporting diligence. This reflects a partnership decision structure rather than a solo-GP or formal investment-committee model.
Founder Preferences
Updata backs experienced operators running capital-efficient, recurring-revenue software businesses with strong unit economics and a repeatable go-to-market engine, explicitly outside the Bay Area. The firm markets itself as "the right partner, not just capital," pairing board-level engagement with an in-house Value Creation team spanning platform services, strategy & growth, GTM excellence, human capital, product & tech, and operational excellence.
