WaterBridge Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
WaterBridge Ventures is a thesis-driven, early-stage venture firm built for India, on India's own form factors. The firm's position is that India is several economies, each with its own trust curves and unit economics, so Western playbooks cannot be copied. It says it calls a theme first and then finds the founder who can execute it. It cites Machine Learning in 2018 (DoubtNut), AI and Robotics in 2019 (Posha), Enterprise AI in 2020 (Atlan) and Food Bioscience in 2022. Its public sector buckets are AI and Deep Tech, Digital Economy and Infrastructure, and IP-Led Manufacturing and Distribution.
Stage Focus
The first cheque is Seed to pre-Series A. The firm says it writes the first institutional cheque into a handful of founders each year and then follows on through Series A, B and C. About 70% of capital is reserved for follow-ons, and the stated average post-Series C stake is 10%.
Check Size
Third-party profiles describe initial cheques of roughly $500K to $3M out of Fund II. The firm's own site does not state a cheque range, so this is lower confidence. Follow-on cheques are larger given the 70% reserve ratio.
Lead Tendency
The site states it leads: it sets terms, takes the board seat and says it leads with conviction in 100% of investments. Fairdeal's Series A is a counter-example where WaterBridge followed in a round led by Bertelsmann India Investments while remaining the largest institutional investor, having led the seed. Lead tendency is therefore best read as leads the entry round and supports later rounds.
Recent Activity
- July 2026: Fairdeal.market closed a $15M Series A led by Bertelsmann India Investments. WaterBridge invested for the third time in three years and is the largest institutional investor. It had led Fairdeal's seed in 2023.
- January 2026: published an essay on low-value, high-volume (LVHV) businesses in Tier 2+ India after the Meesho IPO.
- Fund II closed at $150M in November 2021. Fund I was $30M (2018). An Opportunities Fund I (2023) is listed on the site. The site states roughly $200M raised across funds.
- Fund status: actively investing and following on, with no announced Fund III found.

Decision Process
Partnership. The site says 80% of deals are outbound or warm introductions, with a 0.25% strike rate from top of funnel, and that it tells founders why when it says no. A warm intro is helpful but the firm also runs outbound.
Founder Preferences
Founders whose insight is earned rather than borrowed, with deep closeness to the market (for example, founders based in the towns they serve), cost discipline, trust-first go-to-market and emotional intelligence. The portfolio page tags founders as first-time or repeat.
Geographic Focus
India and India-centric companies, including Bharat (Tier 2+ India) consumer and B2B businesses, with some global companies founded by Indian teams (Atlan, Posha, Pocketpills in Canada).
Gaps
Cheque size and AUM come from third-party and site statements and may be dated. Per-company investment stage and date were not on the portfolio page, so none are recorded. Company domains were left null except where known.
