Webb Investment Network Research

Investment Thesis

Webb Investment Network (WIN) is the early-stage investment vehicle of Maynard Webb, former COO of eBay and former CEO of LiveOps. Webb founded WIN in 2010 to formalize angel investing he had already been doing informally for two decades, backing operators and technical founders he came to know through the Silicon Valley operating world. The firm states its thesis plainly on its own site: "We help founders build breakout companies. We partner with ambitious and curious early-stage founders who want to learn and grow as leaders." The emphasis is less on a narrow category thesis and more on founder quality and coachability — WIN backs people it believes can become strong operating leaders, then surrounds them with a hands-on network.

Sector Focus

WIN is a generalist early-stage fund with a historical center of gravity in consumer internet, mobile, cloud computing, and enterprise software — directly downstream of Maynard Webb's own operating background at eBay, Salesforce, Bay Networks, and LiveOps. The current portfolio spans developer tools and infrastructure (Chef, Diffbot, Kentik, Lacework, Mailgun), security (Elevate Security, Verkada, Nightfall, TCell/Rapid7), fintech and payments (WePay, Airbase, Poynt), HR/work management (Legion, Rypple, Koan), and a growing cluster of applied-AI companies (Augmodo, Palona AI, Guild.ai, Tenzo AI, Detections AI).

Stage Focus

WIN invests at Pre-Seed and Seed, occasionally following into Series A for existing portfolio companies. Third-party trackers (VCMatch, ConnectSafely) consistently place WIN as a Pre-Seed/Seed specialist rather than a multi-stage fund.

Check Size

WIN's own site states the check size directly: "We invest $500-750K in early-stage technology companies." This is corroborated by third-party investor databases citing a similar $500K-$750K range, though some list a wider historical range ($100K-$5M) reflecting occasional larger or follow-on checks.

Lead Tendency

WIN's behavior is mixed: it co-led Code Four's $2.7M seed round in November 2025 alongside AME Cloud Ventures, but was a smaller participant (not lead) in Augmodo's $21M 2026 round led by TQ Ventures. The pattern is consistent with a network-driven angel fund that sometimes anchors a round for founders in its close network and otherwise follows alongside larger institutional leads.

Recent Activity

WIN remains an active investor with a low but steady pace of new investments (roughly one to a handful of new logos per year per Tracxn/Pitchbook tracking), heavily supplemented by follow-on participation in existing portfolio companies' later rounds. Most recent tracked activity: Augmodo's $21M raise (July 2026), and portfolio company Kentik's acquisition by Infoblox (announced July 2026, closed August 2026).

Portfolio Highlights

WIN's portfolio includes one of the largest exit track records for a fund this size: notable outcomes include AppLovin (IPO), Okta (IPO), PagerDuty (IPO), Zuora (IPO), Turo, WePay (acquired by Chase), Dropbox Sign/HelloSign (acquired by Dropbox), Kentik (acquired by Infoblox, 2026), Wavefront (acquired by VMware), and Compose (acquired by IBM). Maynard Webb's angel investment in Okta's 2009 seed round, made when Okta was "two guys with an idea," is frequently cited by Okta co-founder Frederic Kerrest as foundational to the company's growth.

Team

  • Maynard Webb — Founder. Former COO of eBay, former Chairman/CEO of LiveOps, board director at Visa and AppLovin, former Chairman of Yahoo!. Author of "Rebooting Work" and "Dear Founder."
  • Jeremy Schneider — Managing Director, day-to-day investment lead.
  • Jonathan Pines — Managing Director.
  • Irene Webb — CFO.
  • Dena Porter — Business Operations Manager.
  • Satra Hawkins — Head of Community, runs WIN's founder/affiliate events (CEO summits, CTO/GTM/HR micro-summits, round-tables).

WIN also maintains a large "Affiliate Network" of ~90 operating executives (former eBay, Salesforce, Google, Microsoft, Airbnb, Visa and other tech leaders) who co-invest alongside WIN and provide portfolio companies with hands-on operating help — a structural differentiator versus a typical seed fund.

Decision Process

WIN operates as a small partnership (two Managing Directors plus the founder) rather than a solo-GP shop or a large investment committee; Maynard Webb is described in WIN's own materials as effectively the fund's sole LP, giving the team latitude to move quickly on conviction.

Founder Preferences

WIN explicitly favors "ambitious and curious early-stage founders who want to learn and grow as leaders" — language that signals a preference for coachable, operator-minded founders over pure product/technical visionaries who resist input. Many portfolio founders are first-time CEOs stepping out of operating roles at large tech companies (mirroring Webb's own path from eBay COO to investor).

Geographic Focus

Primarily US, concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area, with portfolio companies also in Seattle (Augmodo) and other US tech hubs. No material presence outside the US was found in the site or portfolio.
