Woven Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Woven Capital is Toyota's growth-stage venture capital arm, established to back innovators pioneering new frontiers in mobility and the broader industrial and energy transition. The firm invests in transformative technologies across AI, automation, energy, and sustainability, seeking companies whose products can plug into Toyota's global manufacturing, supply chain, and mobility ecosystem while also standing on their own as category-defining businesses. Unlike a purely financial investor, Woven Capital positions itself as a strategic partner: more than 80% of its portfolio companies are reported to actively work with Toyota Group, leveraging in-house engineering, manufacturing, and commercial expertise to accelerate development and go-to-market.
Sector Focus
Woven Capital organizes its thesis around three pillars:
- Mobility & Emerging Technologies - autonomous driving, cybersecurity, data & connectivity, space technology, software-defined vehicles, and vehicle retail/aftersales.
- Industrial Value Chain - applied and physical AI, smart manufacturing, industrial robotics, worker safety, supply chain, and data infrastructure.
- Decarbonization & Circularity - electrification and EV charging infrastructure, vehicle circularity, sustainable energy, advanced materials, battery technology, and carbon-neutral technology.
Stage Focus
The firm invests at growth stage, targeting companies from Series B through late-stage rounds that have already demonstrated product-market fit and global ambition. It is not a seed or early-stage investor.
Check Size
Typical checks range from roughly $10M to $50M per investment, consistent with a growth-stage, often co-lead or follow-on strategy alongside other institutional and strategic investors.
Lead Tendency
Woven Capital both leads and co-leads rounds (for example, co-leading Moove's $250M Series C alongside Mubadala) and also participates as a strategic follower in larger syndicates (CesiumAstro's $470M Series C, Machina Labs' $124M Series C, Xona's $170M Series C). Its distinguishing value-add is less about pricing/leading and more about the Toyota ecosystem access it brings post-investment.
Recent Activity
Woven Capital launched Fund II in September 2025 with $800M in new capital, matching the size of Fund I and bringing total long-term investment capacity to approximately $1.6B. Fund II targets 20-25 new investments in Series B to late-stage companies across AI, automation, climate, and energy. Since Fund I launched in 2021, the firm has invested in 18+ companies. Recent 2026 activity includes Series C rounds in Moove ($250M, autonomous mobility infrastructure), Xona Space Systems ($170M, satellite positioning/navigation), CesiumAstro ($470M, space and defense communications), and Machina Labs ($124M, robotic manufacturing infrastructure for defense and advanced mobility).
Portfolio Highlights
Notable portfolio companies span mobility, space, robotics, and climate/energy: Nuro (autonomous delivery), WHILL (personal mobility devices), Moove (autonomous mobility infrastructure), Stoke Space (reusable rockets), ElevenLabs (AI voice), CesiumAstro and Xona (space communications and navigation), UVeye (vehicle inspection AI), WeaveGrid (EV grid integration), Third Wave Automation and Machina Labs (industrial/manufacturing robotics), Intuition Robotics (elder-care AI companion), Foretellix (autonomous vehicle verification), Ridecell (fleet operations software), Shippeo (supply chain visibility), and Corvus Energy (marine battery systems).
Team
The investment team is led by Ro Gupta as CEO and Managing Director. In March 2026, Woven Capital appointed its first Chief Investment Officer, Michiko Kato (a 2020 hire and 15-year investing veteran, also named CEO of Toyota Invention Partners, making her the first female CEO of a wholly owned Toyota subsidiary) and its first Chief Operating Officer, Mia Panzer, who moved over from a Toyota technology subsidiary to lead finance, operations, HR, and legal strategy. The broader investment team includes Partner Nicole LeBlanc and Principals Will Fung, Prashant Kumar Bothra, Betty Lee, Jarek Khoilian, and Manas Punhani, supported by a dedicated Portfolio Success team that works directly with founders post-investment.
Decision Process
As a corporate venture arm with a defined partnership structure (Managing Director, CIO, Partner, and Principal levels), investment decisions appear to run through a partnership/investment-committee process rather than a solo GP model, though the exact mechanics are not publicly detailed.
Founder Preferences
Woven Capital favors founders building category-defining, technically ambitious companies in mobility, industrial automation, space, and energy who are open to a deep strategic relationship with Toyota's manufacturing and commercial ecosystem, not just capital.
Geographic Focus
Global, with a portfolio spanning North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, reflecting Toyota's worldwide manufacturing and mobility footprint. The firm's Silicon Valley presence is centered in Palo Alto, California.
