Investment Thesis
WRF Capital is the venture investment arm of Washington Research Foundation (WRF), a Seattle-based nonprofit founded in 1981 by Tom Cable, Bill Gates Sr., and Hunter Simpson. WRF operates at the intersection of academic research, technology development, public and private investment, and philanthropy. Its mission is to support researchers and entrepreneurs advancing life-changing innovations, funded in large part by licensing revenue WRF has earned from University of Washington technology (over $448M returned to UW to date). WRF Capital exists specifically to fund the commercialization of "cutting-edge technology spinouts from research institutions," and is frequently the first institutional money into a company.
Sector Focus
WRF Capital invests across three broad areas:
- Life sciences: biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, digital health
- Information technology: enterprise software, internet-based solutions
- Physical sciences: advanced materials, scientific instrumentation
In practice, the portfolio skews heavily toward biotech and protein-engineering/synthetic-biology companies (many spun out of the UW Institute for Protein Design), with a secondary cluster in digital health, robotics, and materials science (batteries, membranes, alloys).
Stage Focus
Pre-seed through Series A. WRF Capital positions itself as an early, often first-check investor for research-institution spinouts, syndicating with angels and other VCs in later rounds rather than leading growth-stage rounds.

Initial investments typically range from $100,000 to $2,000,000, with reserves held for follow-on participation in later rounds. WRF deploys roughly $5 million per year into Washington-based startups.
Lead Tendency
WRF Capital both leads and follows: it is described as "often the first money in" and willing to lead seed rounds, but it consistently partners with and syndicates alongside other angels and VC firms rather than acting as a solo investor.

Active portfolio companies span protein-design therapeutics (Vilya, Xaira Therapeutics, Lila Biologics, Talus Bioscience, Umoja Biopharma), digital health (Medcurity, Wavely Diagnostics, AdaptX), robotics (Olis Robotics, Dopl Technologies, Wibotic), and advanced materials (Group14 Technologies, Membrion, Modumetal).

Decision Process
WRF Capital emphasizes thorough due diligence and selective investment, consistent with a small, partnership-style investment team (Strategic Investments + Investment Associate roles) rather than a single solo GP, reporting through the CFO and CEO.
Founder Preferences
WRF Capital targets founders spinning out of Washington research institutions, particularly the University of Washington, Washington State University, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB). Deep technical/scientific founders with institutional IP are strongly preferred over generalist founding teams.
Geographic Focus
Exclusively Washington state. WRF Capital does not invest outside Washington; this is a hard geographic constraint tied to its nonprofit mission of returning value to the local research ecosystem.
