Alpine Space Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Alpine Space Ventures (ASV) is a Munich-based, industry-insider-led venture capital firm focused exclusively on the space industrial base. Founded in 2020 by former SpaceX avionics VP Bulent Altan and long-time investor Joram Voelklein, the firm was built on the observation that Europe's space sector in the late 2010s looked like the early days of American NewSpace, when SpaceX and its peers were just standing up. ASV's thesis is that as space access becomes cheaper (largely due to SpaceX), a specialized supply chain will emerge around it, similar to what happened in automotive - components, satellite manufacturing, ground infrastructure, and data/service layers built on top of low-cost launch. The firm explicitly avoids long-horizon, speculative "sci-fi moonshot" plays and instead backs teams delivering a 10x improvement on an existing, addressable market, largely as beneficiaries of (not competitors to) SpaceX's launch cost curve.
Sector Focus
ASV invests across the full space industrial value chain: components and satellite manufacturing (Blackwave's COPVs, Source Energy's solar arrays), satellite platforms (K2 Space, Reflex Aerospace), ground infrastructure (Northwood Space), propulsion/mobility (Morpheus Space), and geospatial data (constellr, thermal imaging satellites). Two demand drivers the firm names explicitly are telecommunications and Earth observation. The firm has an increasing dual-use/defense tilt, evidenced by its membership in the NATO DIANA Capital Network, the European Defense Investor Network, and NATO SPACENET/the Industrial Advisory Group.
Stage Focus
ASV is primarily a Series A investor that will also do select seed deals. Per the firm's own site, it typically backs early-stage companies that already have an established customer pipeline and initial revenue from first product versions, though it welcomes earlier contact to track promising teams over time.
Check Size
At Fund I's 2024 close, ASV described initial check sizes up to $5.4M (€5M), with dry powder reserved for follow-on rounds up to $30M+ (€30M+) into a single company over multiple rounds. The firm's current website states it typically invests €10-20M initially and usually leads rounds, suggesting either a larger blended ticket including reserves, or an evolution in strategy since Fund I's initial deployment. Either way, ASV is a lead investor with meaningful follow-on capacity.
Lead Tendency
ASV usually leads rounds. It led Morpheus Space's Series A ("could not have wished for a better lead investor," per the CEO) and joined as a syndicate member (not lead) in Reflex Aerospace's €50M Series A led by Human Element.
Recent Activity
ASV closed its first fund in July 2024 at $184M (€170M) - the largest first-time VC fund dedicated to space globally, backed by more than 20 early SpaceX employees plus institutional LPs including the European Investment Fund (EIF, €60M committed via CASSINI/InvestEU/ERP in 2023) and the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF, an additional €10M in March 2024). The fund's mandate is 10-15 total investments, and it had made five by the July 2024 close. ASV's seven current portfolio companies have been highly active through 2025-2026: K2 Space raised a $500M Series D (July 2026) after a $110M raise in early 2025 and a $50M raise in early 2024; Northwood Space closed a $100M Series B plus a $49.8M US Space Force contract (January 2026) following a $30M Series A in 2025; Reflex Aerospace closed a €50M Series A (with ASV participating) and shipped its first commercial satellite in December 2024; Blackwave opened direct commercial sales of its composite pressure vessels in mid-2025.
Portfolio Highlights
ASV's seven-company portfolio spans the value chain: Northwood Space (ground infrastructure, Torrance CA), K2 Space (large satellite platforms, Torrance CA), Reflex Aerospace (payload-specific satellites, Berlin), Blackwave (composite pressure vessels, Munich), Source Energy (spacecraft solar power systems, Longmont CO), constellr (thermal-imaging Earth observation, Munich), and Morpheus Space (electric propulsion and space mobility software, Dresden). No exits or write-offs are disclosed; all seven appear to be actively scaling, with K2 Space and Northwood Space each raising multiple nine-figure rounds within the past 18 months.
Team
- Bulent Altan, Founding Partner - Early SpaceX engineer; helped establish SpaceX's avionics department and served as VP overseeing Falcon, Dragon, and early Starlink development; 20+ years in aerospace.
- Joram Voelklein, Founding Partner - Entrepreneur and investor with a finance background focused on NewSpace; track record supporting companies through growth stages and public offerings.
- Catriona Chambers, Technical Director - 16 years at SpaceX (2005-2021); engineering degrees from Oxford and Princeton; led Starship avionics and managed a 90-person engineering team.
- Lynn Zoenen, Principal - NewSpace business development and strategic advisory background; led European sales for ispace; helped create a UN governance framework for space resources at the Hague; co-founded Moonarch.
- Sven Meyer-Brunswick, Principal - Space industry executive with an engineering background; grew a space company from seed through a stock market debut, leading over a dozen capital markets transactions including German and Nasdaq listings.
- Christina Kotzur, CFO - CFA charterholder; prior CFO roles at Odewald KMU and Everwood Capital; investment director at TRUMPF Venture; asset manager at Thesan Capital.
- Hans Koenigsmann, Technical Advisor (per TechCrunch) - SpaceX's fourth technical employee (2002).
Decision Process
The firm operates as a partnership of two Founding Partners (Altan, Voelklein) supported by a Technical Director, two Principals, and a CFO - consistent with a partnership-style decision process rather than a solo-GP or large investment-committee structure.
Founder Preferences
ASV looks for technically strong teams with market insight, strong customer focus, and rapid iteration - "both technically top notch and business-savvy." The firm's own deep operating pedigree (50+ years combined NewSpace experience, 30+ at SpaceX) makes it a natural fit for founders who value hands-on technical partnership over pure capital.
Geographic Focus
ASV backs European and US space companies, with roughly 70% of Fund I earmarked for Europe and the remainder for selective US investments. It is a founding participant in numerous European space policy and industry bodies: the NATO DIANA Capital Network, the NATO Innovation Fund's LP base, the European Investment Fund's LP base, the European Defense Investor Network, BDI's NewSpace Initiative, NATO SPACENET/Industrial Advisory Group, the ESA Zero Debris Charter (inaugural signatory), and the CASSINI Investment Facility.
