Asu Capital Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Asu Capital Partners (ACP) is a Tokyo-based pre-seed/seed venture capital firm founded in August 2023 by Hideo Natsume and Lucheng (Luke) Li under the thesis "Japan to Global." The firm's name, "Asu," means "tomorrow" in Japanese and also echoes the ancient Assyrian word for "east" or "place of the rising sun" — the linguistic root of "Asia." ACP positions itself as the first institutional partner for founders working in unproven categories, before a market has a name or consensus has formed.
The firm's core belief is that Japan has spent decades at the frontier of structural challenges — an aging, shrinking population and the need to redesign social infrastructure — and that the knowledge generated by solving those problems locally can become globally exportable IP. In the AI era, where execution barriers have fallen dramatically, ACP explicitly says it screens for "why you" rather than "what you're building": unique founder experience and unshakeable conviction are treated as the true moat, since the same conditions that make a company hard to build also make it hard to copy.
Stage Focus
Exclusively pre-seed and seed. ACP aims to be the first institutional check into founders building category-defining companies.
Check Size
Typical investment is $200,000–$300,000 per company, consistent with early-stage norms in the Japanese seed market.
Lead Tendency
ACP writes small checks ($200K–$300K) out of a modest $10M fund and has co-invested alongside larger strategics and funds (e.g., MIXI on Volve Creative's round; Genesia Ventures and Dawn Capital on NEULO's round), suggesting the firm typically follows or co-invests rather than leading rounds.
Recent Activity
ACP's debut vehicle, "Asu Capital Partners No. 1 Investment Business Limited Partnership" (¥1.5B / ~$10M), progressed through four closes and reached final close on July 1, 2025, backed by LPs including MIXI, DeNA, iid, Yoshimei, Yoren, Fukuoka Bank, TBS Television, Yamanashi Chuo Bank, Yostar, Kashima Antlers F.C., Yitu Capital, and angel investor Kazuya Fujii (roughly 40% of LPs are international). By final close the fund had deployed into 12 portfolio companies, half of which had already begun overseas expansion; roughly 50% of founders backed have international backgrounds and a third are women. The firm continues to actively deploy, including a June 2026 investment in footwear brand NEULO.

Team
- Hideo Natsume, Founding Partner — Born in Tokyo, raised in Beijing; dual-degree graduate of Tsinghua University (Law and Economics/Management) and its School of Public Policy. Previously a principal at East Ventures covering startup investment and international expansion support. Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2025. Co-founded ACP in 2023.
- Lucheng (Luke) Li, Founding Partner — Born in Shanghai; graduate of Waseda University (Political Science and Economics). Co-founded an international-student education company before joining Recruit, then moved to Z Venture Capital (formerly YJ Capital) focused on cross-border investment and portfolio internationalization. Covers consumer tech, web3, social, entertainment/gaming, and fintech. Co-founded ACP in 2023.
Decision Process
Two-person founding-partner structure; investment decisions appear to be made jointly by Natsume and Li as a small partnership.
Founder Preferences
ACP explicitly favors founders with singular, hard-to-replicate personal experience and conviction that predates market consensus, rather than founders chasing an already-legible category. The firm's AG1 Residency program selects teams purely on "resolution" — how deeply they understand the problem and why they are pursuing it now — rather than traction or metrics.
Geographic Focus
Headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Invests primarily in Japan-founded startups with global ambitions, and runs AG1 Residency, Japan's first live-in startup residency program (in partnership with DeNA for Batch 2), open to founders of any nationality who can spend 10 weeks in Tokyo.
Programs
AG1 Residency is ACP's flagship platform for sourcing: a 10-week, fully-funded (housing + coworking) live-in program in Tokyo for pre-founding to seed-stage teams (up to 3 core members), pairing them with the ACP team for 0→1 product and go-to-market support. Batch 2 launched in partnership with DeNA in February 2026. ACP was also selected as a partner entity under Tokyo's "TOKYO SUTEAM" startup ecosystem initiative.
