Avra Research
Investment Thesis
Avra is a San Francisco-based growth-stage investment firm founded in 2023 by Anu Hariharan, former Managing Director of Y Combinator's Continuity growth fund, alongside Founding Partner Tiffany Kosolcharoen (former Head of Investment Research at YC Continuity). Avra's model is unusual: it pairs a highly selective, invite-only CEO education program with direct equity investment, betting that the best access to the fastest-growing private companies comes from helping their founders become better operators rather than from cold outbound sourcing. The firm's public-facing thesis is "we help great founders become exceptional CEOs" — a founder-development flywheel that doubles as a proprietary deal-sourcing and access engine into some of the hottest growth-stage rounds in AI, fintech, and vertical SaaS.
Stage Focus
Avra targets companies just past product-market fit: the program is explicitly restricted to "post Series A startups with strong product market fit," and the investing side follows that same graduation point through growth rounds (Series C, D, E and beyond). This is not an early-stage or pre-seed check-writer; it is a growth-stage participant and occasional co-lead once a company has already proven itself in the market.
Check Size
Avra has not publicly disclosed a standard check-size band. Its confirmed investments are large syndicated growth rounds — a $265M Series E co-lead in Whatnot (Jan 2025) and participation in Decagon's $250M Series D (Jan 2026) — suggesting Avra writes meaningful but not lead-sized checks in most rounds, stepping up to co-lead selectively (as with Whatnot).
Lead Tendency
Mixed. Avra co-led Whatnot's Series E alongside Greycroft and DST Global, but in most other disclosed rounds (Decagon, Zepto) it appears as one of several participating investors rather than the lead.
Recent Activity
Avra is actively deploying. It filed to raise a $250M Avra Fund II in early 2026 (on top of earlier SPV vehicles — Avra SPV III and IV — used to back individual portfolio companies). Confirmed recent activity includes participation in Whatnot's $545M Series G (Aug 2026, ~$20B valuation), Decagon's $250M Series D (Jan 2026, tripling Decagon's valuation to $4.5B), and a return to Whatnot's cap table via the $265M Series E co-lead (Jan 2025, ~$5B valuation). Avra also participated in Zepto's $665M round (Jun 2024, $3.6B valuation) alongside Avenir and Lightspeed.
Portfolio Highlights
Avra's portfolio spans roughly 90 companies that have moved through its CEO program and/or its cap tables, heavily concentrated in applied AI and infrastructure: Mistral AI, Physical Intelligence, Runway ML, HeyGen, Photoroom, Cartesia, Decagon, Ambience Healthcare, Hebbia, Reducto, Browserbase, Clerk, Supabase, Hex, Omni, Roboflow, Replicate, and 1X, alongside consumer/marketplace names Whatnot and Zepto. Several portfolio companies have since become unicorns or near-unicorns (Whatnot at ~$20B, Zepto at ~$3.6B+, Decagon at $4.5B, Mistral at multi-billion valuation).
Team
- Anu Hariharan — Founder and Managing Partner. Formerly Managing Director of Y Combinator's Continuity growth-stage fund; built Avra after YC shuttered that division in March 2023.
- Tiffany Kosolcharoen — Founding Partner, Investments and Research. Formerly Head of Investment Research at YC Continuity; earlier roles at Meta.
Decision Process
Small partnership structure (Anu Hariharan and Tiffany Kosolcharoen as the named investing partners), consistent with a lean, high-conviction growth fund rather than a large investment committee.
Founder Preferences
Avra explicitly selects for post-Series A founders who already have strong product-market fit and are wrestling with the "awkward phase" of scaling — hiring leadership, improving strategic clarity, and preparing to operate like a public company. Its own marketing emphasizes teaching from operators who have "been there," and its portfolio skews toward technical founder-CEOs building applied-AI and infrastructure products (Decagon, Mistral, Physical Intelligence, Runway ML).
Geographic Focus
Primarily US (San Francisco Bay Area), with notable international exposure through Zepto (India) and several MENA-focused companies in its program roster (Hala, Lean, Manzil).
